Hi,

Yes, you can add additional hard drive. Please follow the below steps to add the drive sucessfully.

STEP 1:

Make sure you have room for an extra hard drive, here's one way to do this:

1. Restart your computer and go into the BIOS menu as per below instruction.
Steps to enter BIOS:
After turning ON, immediately press the F10 key if your computer was built in 2006 or later (came with Vista). Press the F1 key if your computer was built before 2006 (XP or earlier). Press the key once every second until a BIOS Setup utility screen opens.
2. Go to the "Standard CMOS Settings."
3. In this menu, you will find four settings labeled as follows: PRIMARY MASTER:, AUTO/PRIMARY SLAVE:, SECONDARY MASTER:, SECONDARY SLAVE:. Change all fields to auto detection.
4. Reboot your computer.
5. On the first or second screen, you will see something like the screen above and it will say detecting (drive(prim/sec)) : (name of the drive if present). If any of them say none, remember which drive it is. If all of them have a drive name, all your bays are filled and you can't add a new hard drive without removing a disk drive or hard drive. Consider making an external USB drive.

STEP 2:

1.Shut down your computer.
2.Unplug all of the cords from the back of your computer and pull the computer out from the desk.
3.Remove the case screws. If you're having difficulty, it's a good idea to consult your manual on how your particular case is removed. Put the screws in a safe place so you don't lose them. Remove the side panel and place it out of the way.
4.Find the area where all the flat ribbon cables (or SATA cables, which are smaller and usually red) connect to the main board. Find the cable that corresponds to the free drive either primary or secondary.

STEP 3:

1.Set the jumpers so the drive knows whether to act as a master or slave. The jumpers are the set of pins on the back of the hard drive. They'll have a couple of rubber or plastic blocks covering some pins. Find the diagram or instructions for your new drive on to set the jumper for the master/slave.
2.Find the empty bay in your computer case. Using the screws that came with the drive or computer case, mount the drive.
3.Connect the cable to the hard drive. If it won't go in, make sure that the safety bump is aligned with the hole.
4.Connect a Molex power cable, (a smaller connector with red, yellow, and black wires.)
5.Put the side panel back on the computer and put the screws back in.
6.Plug all of the cables back into the rear of the computer, and connect them to their power sources if you unplugged them.
7.Boot up the computer. Go into your BIOS at startup.Check the BIOS auto detect to ensure the second drive is detected. On the screen that shows that primary master/slave,secondary master/slave you should see the name of your new hard drive.

Thanks & Regards
Rizwan.

SOURCE: Trying to add another internal hard drive to Dell Dimension 3000

Leave the cable connection as it is. That is, one ribbon cable for the 2 dvd drives and the original cable for the old hard drive. You dont need to set the jumper on the second hdd. It has to be set to 'cable select'. Then make sure to connect the second hard drive to the middle port of the ide cable. Don't forget to connect the power connector to the drive. It should work that way.

Two ports on the motherboard
primary ide controller port (for master and slave hard drives. both drives jumpers should be set to cable select. then make sure to connect the right ends of the cable to the drive. middle port is for slave. port on the end is for master. check the power connectors for both drives.)
secondary ide controller port (for 2 dvd drives.)

Dell inspiron 3847

Dell has not published the procedures for installing an additional SATA hard drive, the Inspiron 3847 has a second 3.5" bay, for the second hard drive next to the primary hard drive, there should be a set of rails located in the bay, two 6-32X1/4, phillips head screws are needed, to attach the rails.
The procedures on pages 26 to 28 of the owners manual should give you an idea of what is required for the installation.
http://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products-Infodev/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_inspiron_desktop/inspiron-3847-desktop_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf
You will need a SATA data cable there should be a spare SATA power connector inside the case.

After installing the drive enter the system setup and check that the hard drive is 'enabled' [on] and recognized.
For Windows to recognize the second hard drive, it must be partitioned and formatted.

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management, right click new drive, select format, then you can assign a drive letter.

Can I put in my PC Compaq Presario SR 1610NX a Hard drive Maxtor 40GB, 3.5 ? Thanks

Hi,
Desktop Specs Link Motherboard Specs Link
A. From the first link above, you already have a 80GB 7200rpm hard drive and a combo drive with no further details. you can only use two additional devices one 3.5 inch external and 5.25 inch external bays.
B. Assuming that two devices are already IDE devices, that will leave you two additional IDE and two SATA device.

1. Turn off your computer before plugging any additional device and proceed with cautuion.
2. Add the additional 40GB Maxtor IDE hard drive, you will have to mount the drive into the casing and put some screw to lock or use tool lesslock if its present. (Check the jumper if its a master or slave) if you have configured the 40GB drive as master and you're going to add additional IDE drive you have to put the jumper in slave header.
3. Now put the IDE cable to the hard drive and to the IDE2 of the mother board mount firmly. (you cannot mount the IDE cable if it is in the wrong position)
4. Next the four pin power from the power supply to the hard drive. (you cannot mount the power cable if it is in the wrong position)
5. Power On your computer and press Delete or F2 to access bios, proceed to the option boot priority select your Combo drive as first boot, next your 80GB Hard driver, press F10 save.
6. Power On your computer and check your 40GB hard drive through device manager.
7. Time to add your new hard drive through disk management, so you will be able to see your new drive from your computer. I forgot how WIN XP recognize new hard drives especially the fresh one.

Hopefully this information helps.
Feel free to ask, so I can clarify things.
Thank you for using FixYa.

My desktop model is Compaq SR5213 with 250G harddisk. Recently, I would add a new internal hard disk (3.5", 1 TB), is it possible? As I don't want to buy a external hard disk. thanks

You can add 1 TB hard as additional to 250 GB Hard disk. You did not need to buy a external hard disk. Both hard disks will work together and make total hard disk space- 1.25 TB.

Sony recommends to use the preinstalled Hard Drive as the Recovery Discs works with the specific Hard Drive. However, you can add additional Hard Drive to the Computer.
Please check the link below for more information.

Your computer is shipped with 80GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive. you can use Hard Drive of size 80 to 500 GB for best functionality.

Trying to add another internal hard drive to Dell Dimension 3000

Ok... one end of the ide cable goes to the board... make sure that's plugged in correctly and has a blue connector.... second... the last drive on the other end has to be the master... the drive before that is the slave... if that setup is not working ensure that the drivers are set for master and slave... also make the power is pluigged into both drives

Can i add 142GB of hard disk on Dell PE 2600 motherboard

You can always add more storage to a server, as long as you have enough internal connectors in the server. You can also purchase another scsi or sata backplane to add more ports if you're out of internal connectors.
You may also want to look into a SAN or NAS device to offload some of your not too frequently used data. Many SAN devices give incredible performance with pretty good scalability.

Hard Drive

Hi,

For some reason, I see a lot of the external USB hard drives having issues. Though I have an IDE to USB external enclosure as well as a 2.5 USB enclosure, I find it more assuring to use a secondary HD installed internally to the PC.

Alternately (and probably more to your requirement), if you intend to add more hard disk space but retain your original configuration, files and data (or simply same everything except bigger) then perhaps what you can do is clone your present HD to a bigger HD and swap when done. There are many programs available for this purpose. An example is Acronis True Image. Alternately, you can do a Google for hard drive cloning software.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
