I hooked up a stereo system for a friend its a 250 watt amp and im using a 1200 watt wiring kit is the kit too high for the amp also i got it hooked up and it was working for a few minutes but all i got out of the subs was a slight vibration and then the fuse on the amp blew can you tell me what went wrong

Let me address the wiring kit first. No the higher wattage kit is not a problem however you will need to change the inline fuse to an amperage that is more suitable for 250 Watts. The amps main fuse will be able to protect the power supply but no need to have a larger fuse than needed.

Now lets talk about the fuse. First off what kind of amp is it? Just for my knowledge. What is the rated impedance that amp can drive bridged mono or stereo (however you have connected it) If the total impedance presented by the woofers is lower than what the amp can drive the amplifiers power supply will demand more current than is designed for. I guess what I need to know is the model of speaker, model of amplifier and size of the inline fuse (right next to battery). Initial diagnosis would say the load on the amp is too large.

Rule of thumb for calculating impedance. The easy way if you have two or more characteristic impedance that are equal then you can add them and divide by the number of impedance to get your total Load however the formula is as follows,

1/((1/Z1)+(1/Z2)+(1/Z3)+(1/Z4)) or (Z1^-1 +Z2^-1+Z3^-1+Z4^-1)^-1
(They are the same thing, just written differently)

In electrical terms Z is your impedance, the negative exponent just means reciprocal.

So in your case if you have 2 dual voice coil subwoofers with a 4 ohm per coil impedance. If you parallel the two coils you would have a 2 ohm impedance. Then if you parallel the two woofers you would have a 1 ohm impedance. This is to low of a load for your amp to drive.

    Fuses are not deteremined by power handling. They are determined by current capable of passing through the fuse. The fuse you have is problem 70 Amps. So you have kicker comp 12s, what is the rated impedance? They come in 4 ohm and 8 ohm. I fyou are blowing fuses I would say you have 4 ohm speakers tied in parallel which would be 2 ohms to the amp. If you want to run bridged mono run the speakers in series. Take the + from one speaker and attache to the appropriate amp terminmal. The - of that speaker would connect to the + of the other speaker. The - from the second speaker would then be attached to the appropriate amp terminal. This would be an 8 ohm load. I would suggest running the amp in stereo. The amp would then see 4 ohms in stereo mode.

Most likely cause is heat. The clearances behind the radio are often not sufficient to provde the proper air coolling that the higher power radios need. The heat sinks on the rear of the radio require a certain amount of air flow to dissipate the heat generated under high load conditions. If you add summer heat to the equation, you can have the radio going into thermal cutout to protect it circuity.

I researched your amp and it looks like its not even 2 ohm stable :( the problem with these companies is they lable there amps 1200 watts MAX, that means they tested the amp in a perfect enviroment and the amp fried somewhere in the ball park of 1200 watts, your best bet is to save your money and buy a nicer amp that is two or one ohm stable... that being said the best way to wire your subs is in series

Were do i plug in the RCA cables from the amp to a factory radio? do i need any sort of adapters if my stereo dose not have inn or outputs? and where do i hook up the remote from the amp?


Most factory radios do not have RCA outs, but most will have a remote wire. Usually used for a power antenna option. Your remote wire from the amp could be hooked to the power antenna wire on the factory radio and it would work great for turning on the amp. As for the RCA inputs on your amp, you will not be able to use them without RCA outs on your factory deck. Although most amps offer a high level input alternative and will use the standard speaker level out on your factory deck. This means the rear channel speaker wires from your factory deck will be used to feed the signal to the amp. You will have to check the instructions and manufactorer recomendations for the amp you are trying to hook up. Have fun and good luck!

As I said in the previous post no the wiring kit is just fie. Yo uwill need to change the inline fuse and that is about it. The problem exists in how you have your subwoofers wired and what impedance is being presented to the amp. Please read my previous response to your your post.

Probably need an installer - depends on yr/make/model of car - stereo and wiring diagram for sub system. There are lots of questions need answering and if not installed properly, you can certainly damage the stereo, sub system. Subs use a lot of power and improper wiring could cause problems, even fires !

Legend Amp hook up manual.


Pretty Straight Forward get a 8 or 4 gauge amp wiring kit.

Run your hot wire to the +12V from the battery make sure to install the supplied inline fuse near the battery don't connect to the battery until installation is complete.

Run the REM to your stereo power ant. Wire. if available.

Run the GND to Metal Chassis Ground keep it as short as possible.

Run the RCA Cable from the back of the Stereo to the RCA Inputs or Low Level on the amp.

This amp is 2 Ohm Stereo Stable which means you can connect 2 (4 ohm) speakers in parallel to each channel or 1 (4 ohm) speaker on each channel or you can connect 1 (4 ohm) Speaker in bridged mode.

There are other speaker configurations you could use but you cannot drop the load below 2 Ohm in stereo mode and no lower than 4 ohm in bridged mode.

06 cobalt stock system hook up


I cant really assist in this matter but I can let you know that I have a system in my 2006 Chevy Cobalt and that I have an aftermarket cd player installed. I had to pay $130 for a special adapter for it to be wired into the system because GM's newest idea of installing the stereo and airbags on the same wire scheme, is kind of a dumb idea.

Can't get my amplifier to work.


Any idea how this is all wired up?
I think what they have may used is an 'RF modulator kit' to get the signal from your stereo to the amp. These are commonly used when factory stereo's don't have any outputs on the back of them for adding external amps. Even so, when you unplug the RCA cables there should be no signal coming to the amp & no sound coming out of the speakers/subs that are subsequently connected to the amp either.

AMP turns ON then turns off


The power antenna wire only supplies 12vdc when the radio is on. When CD or other sources are selected, the power antenna wire goes to 0vdc. The remote turn-on wire provides 12vdc whenever the head-unit is on. If your amps are powered on only when the radio is turned on, I would bet that you have the power antenna wire connected and not the remote turnon wire.
