Cracked front cover at hinges

I have had my acer 3610 for a year and a half now, and at the hinge on the front of my laptop there is a large crack that just continues to grow, the more I use it.
Is anyone else having this problem??

Mine started as a crack on the front cover at the left corner over the edge of the hinge, then the corner broke off completely and then the same thing happened on the right corner. Both corners are off, and the cover is detached from the hinges. The screen still works but it is very fragile.

have the same problem, case is cracked above both hinges and one hinge is now totally broken free

  • boyumz Mar 28, 2008

I bought two of these laptops for my kids back in Aug 06. One of them had this problem almost right away. My son kept using it until it was close to the time the warranty ran out and then I called Acer. They instructed me to send it back, which I did. About a week and a half later, it was returned looking like brand new! Now the other one is just starting to crack, so I plan on checking with my credit card company to see if it is covered from when I bought it.

  • boyumz Mar 29, 2008

Yay, it turns out since I charged the purchase on my Mastercard, and I still have the receipt, and I still have a copy of the warranty the laptop has an additional 1 year warranty provided by the bank that issued my credit card. I called and they are sending me a claim form. I don't know how long the process will take, but it's better than nothing. So, check your receipts to see how you originally paid for the laptop.

I bought my Acer 3610 in December 2006, it started to crack on the left side about 6 months later, now it has come apart completly on the left side an has started to crack on the right side.

  • stan94131 May 15, 2008

Same problem: my 3610 developed a crack on the cover next to the left hinge. It keeps growing as I open/close the cover and I am afraid it will eventually damage the LCD screen. I've been trying to not close the lid as much as I can but I have to if I'm traveling with the PC. I've tried super-glueing the crack but that didn't work at all.

I thnk the problem is that the hinges on this laptop, unlike other laptops, are quite stiff and it takes a bit of an effort to open the lid. While you are opening it, it pivots the lid and puts a torsional load on it. The plastic lid was not designed for that load.

Same thing happened to my sons. I was wondering what he was doing to it. Glad there are other posts with same problem. I will call Acer and see if they are going to do anything. I have a retail computer store and we will se what they tell us as dealers. ccenter@neb.rr.com

I have same problem with my 3610 laptop back cover cracked on the outside of the left hinge (left when looking at it from the front of the computer). Glad to see some of you have been had success with respected warranties. Hope they will do the same for me

  • markosh Jun 10, 2008

I have the same problem. What did you do to fix it?

  • kp1234 Jun 10, 2008

Yes! I have had this laptop for less than two years and the top cover began to crack near the left hinge within a year! The extended warranty that I purchased from Nebraska Furniture Mart does not cover the case, just the electronics. I am really hot about this! Did anyone have any luck dealing directly with ACER?

  • Anonymous Jun 12, 2008

Yep me too. the crack on the left hinge only gets worse! The corner of mine looks like it is almost ready to break off. I have had mine for three years and the right hinge has started to crack now. I can see inside. Is there anything we can do?

  • Anonymous Jun 30, 2008

My Acer Aspire 7100 Laptop has the same problem after only 1 year the left hinge has cracked all the way to the inside now and now it doesn't close right and I paid over 1500.00 for it. Never again will I buy an Acer Now my wifes HP compact has a better hinge system and she has not had one problem with hers so just a word of advice do not buy an acer and look closely at the hinges of the computer you do buy and make sure they look like the HP Compact laptops hinges. And Acer should feel ashamed to place their name on these crappie notebooks they are making. They should be forced to fix these peices of junk!

  • mr_dsamir Jul 03, 2008

I have acer aspire 3610 which is almost 2 years old by now. Since I keep my laptop open most of the time, there is a big crack at the hinge of the lid on both side. I noticed it very lately. Also, there is some internal disturbance inside the LCD screen near the place where the crack is.

Is there any solution for this.

  • dpcol2bur Jul 10, 2008

  • Anonymous Jul 20, 2008

Same probelm. The back of the screen is cracket by the hindges and the silver pieces have broke of and today the screws fell off. I have about 8 buttons missing. I think acer is a horrible product and will never purchase it again.

I will be contacting Acer to let them know my opinion of their product.

i have an acer aspire9313wmi purchased about 14months ago

i too have a cacked left hinge and it looks like the other one is now cracking. is there anything we can do?

  • yskolnick Aug 03, 2008

I am having the same problem. I put off dealing with it until recently but found out that it is out of warranty. ACER offered to sell me a replacement of the case for 20-30 dollars, so I might just try that.

  • suteki_sutek Aug 10, 2008

My Acer Aspire 3620 has cracks on both sides around the hinges of my cover after exactly 2 years of use; the warranty has ran out so I"m on my own I guess...before you start saying "I told you so" for not buying a more expensive computer my Sony VAIO at triple the price some years ago had major isues within a year with the ethernet circuits (had to replace it with a separate card) and my triple priced Toshiba Portege had charging issues within a year too; I'm on my Acer for more than 10 hours a day so this I guess (although I'm not happy) is not too bad. I'm wondering if anyone tried epoxy since it's thicker and would have more tensile strength...

  • mchertos Aug 17, 2008

My laptop is also cracked from both hinges to the outside of my Acer Aspire 3610. The pressure of opening and shutting the lid seems to settle hear and created the cracks. They get worse and deep. Hope it doesn't affect my monitor. Marian Chertos

  • AcerCracked Oct 12, 2008

My ASSpire 7100 has the same cracked hinge problem. I believe Acer purposely overtightens the hinge so it will crack the case. I've been reading hundreds of emails with the exact same problem,CRACKED CASES. When I contacted Acer the anal retentive "NON"-support stated that cracked cases are "not a known issue" and cases are not warrenty items. They then proceeded to tell me how they would be more than delighted to shaft me for $80 on a new exterior case and slighty more for the inside bezel.... If anyone knows a good lawyer that wants to do a class action lawsuit I'll join in a heartbeat!

  • Anonymous Oct 17, 2008

My daughter's had her 3610 (that she paid for, by the way) for exactly two years. The top has completely separated from the bottom and is holding on by the wires only. We first thought that she was being too rough with it and that's why it had fallen apart. She insisted that she wasn't. Now, after reading all this, I feel kind of bad. She spent an entire summer's babysitting money on this piece of junk. Pretty sad, I say!

  • gwoverton Oct 21, 2008

I have the same problem, my acer aspire 7100 cracked on the left side where the hinge is located. Has anyone found a solution to fix this problem. I've had my computer for a little over a year. Any repair places would be appreciated

  • skrewdriver Nov 08, 2008

I obviously had the same problem. I contacted Acer for advise as i am well out of warranty. I asked about if they sell parts or possible resellers. Their responce was to call them. I did, after about 20 minutes on hold and 20 minutes trying to explain that I have no warranty on it and I just want parts, they finally gave me 2 numbers. I am not going to post them as neither of them were any use and I respect other peoples time. I found a reseller on my own and i think they have 2 back covers left.

  • razzledaz508 Nov 10, 2008

same frustrating issue! the cracks on the right side started about 6 months ago. that side finally broke off in august, at which point i tried to get it fixed with the extended warranty i purchased from the store i got the computer from; but they said they could do nothing about it. at the beginning of october, the left side began to crack and today broke off as well. so i now have a computer that looks like i threw it around all over the place, hanging on by a wire. i have complained to acer and they "can't" do anything because my warranty is up!

  • Anonymous Feb 22, 2009

Same problem on LH hinge after 1.5 year on my Aspire 9302.

This is a clear design problem because my laptop never moved from my desk. Just open the cover in the morning and close in the evening.

    Never buy ACER again.

  • Anonymous Mar 07, 2009

I have the same problem and wondered if it was just me. I actually replaced the cover at my own expense cause it was out of warranty and have since been even more careful than I was before and this new cover has broken in less than a year!

The computer itself is still working fine, but I'm honestly considering getting another one because I hate this design flaw and Acer will be the last company I'll buy one from if they design their products so poorly!

  • Anonymous Mar 13, 2009

    Aspire 7100 broken cover
I have the same issue, I even bought a cover and replaced it myself, it is broken again, I wrote to Acer asking if they had a recall of some sort but the only reply I got was that my warranty was expired, very frustrating.

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2009

yep, i tried to replace thge cover but the screen went black therefore it is in a repair shop. Yes there is no reason whatsoever that could have caused this problem from my side of things. The screen may have become faulty because i left the pc running while dismantling the cover. It is not the inverter , could be the backlight or need a new screen. Just in case this may happen to anyone the screens are quite cheap on flea bay

  • flippingswt Mar 29, 2009

I have the same Acer Aspire 3610, this computer had NEVER left my house since i purchased it about 3 years ago, presently, the right hinge is completely off while the left is deeply cracked so I keep it open just in case which means that I have to clean it about every week when it gets dusty, my next laptop will NOT be an Acer.

  • Anonymous Apr 11, 2009

I have an Acer Aspire 3610 and I have had it for several years, maybe 2. Both of the hinges on my computer are broken all the way across probably because I ignored the problem too long. It is so frustrating because now the screen flops back in forth if you dont prop it just right.

  • leumass Apr 17, 2009

I had the same thing happen to my almost brand new condition laptop. First one side developed a hair-line crack, then the other side did. Finally the one side just split open on the outside. I completely lost everything on my screen. Also a key top came off. I will never buy another ACER as long as I use a laptop.

What does work is this-
Superglue the cracked lid as you WILL have one of these if you are reading this post- dont rush, I did about 10 glue applications over a few days to let it set correctly.
Next remove the offending hinges. You will see to spring/pressed steel curves in the body of the hinge, Next hack saw one (the outer is easier to get to) of these off, this frees the hinge up very well. Worked for me so give it a try

I had the same problem with my acer aspire 3610. The reason i could conclude is the hinges are not of the good quality...they get harden and then make plastic cover of the LCD screen crack. which further puts pressure on the cables and attachments leading to back of the LCD screen. This is perhaps the only reason that LCD goes all white or sometimes black while the laptop is still one.
The suggested solution for this is open your LCD screen carefully ....take good care of screws....as i have lost 2 ...lolz. take out the hinges and try to oil them . You can try any method to loosen the hinges. But dont loose them too much or u will have another problem whereby your LCD screen will go so loose that it will either fall backwards or farwards when you will open it. so be very careful.
Superglue the broken plastic cover and fix every thing back. If u get the LCD turning white or black problem....press the cables at the back of LCD and it will start working ...

Same problem here. The hinges are spung steel clamping a steel pin. They are incredibly tight. My solution so far is to take the hinges out make up a grinding powder from some small grinding "wheels" mix with oil and then work for around 30 minutes! then apply small amounts of oil until all grinding powder off and until you can just move the hingses with strong finger tips and then i am going to glue it back together after bending screen attachment metal brackets back to shape. The hinges are so tight they stress all components attached to them. If you catch it before the metal fails you have a fix. Nuts!

Uponcloser inspection it seems the left hinge began seizing up with the opening andclosing of the screen and it was becoming slightly harder and harder to closeover the past several months and was making slight creaking noises until thehinge finally stopped rotating and by that time the force from pulling the liddown pulled the plastic away from the hinge that was no longer rotating -something had to give and it wasn't the seized up hinge it was the plasticencasing the LCD screen. The plastic pulled apart at the corner and the hingethat was not longer rotating was acting as an obstacle pulling the plasticfarther apart if I closed the lid. I eventually popped the broken left hingeout of the hinge compartment to prevent it from damaging the plastic around thescreen anymore and I am using just the right hinge for now as it is working byitself to close the screen and hold it up for viewing. I will eventually superglue the corner of the plastic screen encasement and look for some otheroptions to assemble some replacement hinge system to compensate for the brokenhinge that I had to remove.

Seems like the hinges were not of a very high quality (maybe someone skimped onthe hinge procurement) or maybe Acer received a bad batch especially if this isa systematic problem that is affecting many Acer laptop users.

Acer is known for packing a lot of mid range features into low-cost laptopsystems so I reckon something had to pare down costs in other areas of thelaptop materials ... looks like it may have been the hinges.

I've had the same problem twice. The first time I sent it in to be repaired and it came back good as new, but four months later, despite being careful, the crack is back in the same spot and has been growing since.

My acer 3610 also had a crack but on the right side i contacted acer and they fixed it for me.

I bought my Acer Aspire from in August of 2006 and the cover cracked near the hinge yesterday. I have babied this laptop since I bought it and it rarely leaves the house. It seems to be a design flaw. I plan to see if Circuit City covers it under its extended warranty.

Cracks near hinge Acer 3613 laptop

Apply a lubricant to the hinges themselves - not a ton of lubricant, as you don't want anything running down into the laptop proper.

What sound like has happened is that the display has somehow been in a bind, and therefore the hinges are in a bind. This makes it harder to moved the hinges, and thus when you open the lid it is making the cracks.

You may also want to unseat / unscrew the hinges and re-tighen the little screws that hold them in place.
