File Names Limited To 7 Characters

Had to reinstall XP SP2 and now my Epson 2400 scanner limits file names to seven characters. Any ideas how I can change that?

Suggestion:

First update your PC to Windows XP service pack 3 and then update all patches after that. The problem will most likely still exist as this limit was an old MS DOS limitation so I'm leaning as the root cause of the problem lies with the Epson Software. After XP is fully updated and patched try the Scanner again. If still limited - uninstall and reinstall the scanner software.

Keep me posted.

What are the naming rules that apply under Windows operating systems?

You mean file names? Ordinarily you can have a path name up to 260 characters. This includes the file name and the parent folder names as well. There are certain reserved combinations you can't use, like COM1, and certain i l legal characters, like *. See here

My unit will only play up to 45 folders on the USB port? Directions say that it can handle up to 250 and 5,000 titles.

Not positive but I think the following would applie to your unit.
FAT format, If more than one partition only first partition read, eight folders deep 999 files max per folder. Suggest that you confirm that file structure meets these requirements. Also some limits on naming convention
Folder names: 50 characters -
File names: 50 character limit

What are illegal characters?

In the context of file names, these are characters that may not be used in the names. Usually, when there is an error message saying you are using illegal characters, there is also a list given of which characters are forbidden.

The ban dates back to programming in Unix days, when certain characters meant certain things to the system, and using those in file names would only confuse the (then) fledgling intelligence.

Same problem here (MX700 scanner, using MP Navigator EX). It really is a pain, isn't it?

If you don't need the date-specific filenames immediately, you can modify the filenames later, in a batch process: http://maketecheasier.com/2-ways-to-batch-rename-files-in-os-x/2009/05/16

Why is this happening This issue can occur as a result of uninstalling the Google Desktop installed by Quickbooks on a computer running Microsoft Windows Vista. Launching QuickBooks after uninstalling Google will cause the error message.

Note: This issue is also known to occur with computers that have been upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista, where Google Desktop was uninstalled under Windows XP. Both cases would yield the same error message.
How to fix the problem This issue was resolved in the latest release for your version of QuickBooks.

I'm assuming you're on Windows not a Mac? File name length maximums are not limited by the application (in your case Adobe) but the operating system. For example,
"C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\My file.doc" is 50 characters long. The limit is 256 characters. Check to see if the number of subdirectories or something is making the name too long to be able to be handled.

Wd my book hard drive wont transfer some files

I suggest you take a note from the message of which file/files is/are causing the problems and rename them. The whole file path counts toward the length, so if a number of files are under a folder with a long name, they might all be triggering the problem, and renaming the folder with the long name, to a shorter name, could solve many of the individual file problems. Aim for a full path name length of less than 256 characters.

And for files with symbols it can't read, have a careful look at all the characters in the full path name, and re-name any files using unusual characters. Stick to using alphabetic and numeric characters. If you know some files with special characters that you have successfully copied, then those characters would be OK too. I think comma, space, plus sign, minus sign, underscore, parentheses are OK, and there are some others.

Some applications will let you save files with long file names in their working folder, without checking the full path name, then when the operating system comes along and bulk-copies things, it's dealing with the full path name and stalls.

Another possibility I haven't tried, is to go into a folder with long file names, and compress everything into a zip file (give it a short name), then when the bulk-move utility moves it all, it doesn't have to deal directly with the long file names. You can unpack it at the other end. As I said, I haven't tried it, but it might work well for you if you don't want to rename the individual files.

Good luck on the big move.

I cannot play few MP3 songs in my mobile. It gives a message as unsupported file. Please give me a solution for this.

I solved this problem by inserting my memory card that contained the Mp3 files on my computer.

Then I went and manually shortened all of the files names. There's a limit of 32 characters for file names on this phone.

After I did this, my phone can play every song!

Hope this helps..

Don't try to use these symbols: "":;!@?/\|{[}]," and only use a period when the filename is over. That's all.

I have the manual and copied it verbatim for you. Please let me know if you need me to scan the manual for you. Acceptable medium formats: The following formats are available for the media used in this unit. The maximum number of characters used for file name including the delimiter (".") and three-character extension are indicated in parentheses. ? ISO 9660 Level 1 (12 characters) ? ISO 9660 Level 2 (31 characters) ? Joliet (64 character; Up to 32 characters are displayed) ? Romeo (128 character; Up to 64 characters are displayed) ? Long file name (200 characters; Up to 64 characters are displayed) ? Maximum number of characters for folder name: 64 (Joliet; Up to 32 characters are displayed) For a list of available characters, see the instruction manual of the writing software and the section Entering file and folder names below. The media reproducible on this unit has the following limitations: ? Maximum number of directory levels: 8 ? Maximum number of files per folder: 255 ? Maximum number of folders: 50 MP3/WMA written in the formats other than the above may not be successfully played and their file names or folder names are not properly displayed. Settings for your MP3/WMA encoder and CD writer Do the following setting when compressing audio data in MP3/WMA data with the MP3/WMA encoder. ? Transfer bit rate MP3: 8 ?320 kbps WMA: 48 ?192 kbps ? Sampling frequency MP3: 8, 11.025, 12, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 kHz WMA: 32, 44.1, 48 kHz When you use your CD writer to record MP3/WMA up to the maximum disc capacity, disable additional writing. For recording on an empty disc up to the maximum capacity at once, check Disc at Once. Play mode may not be possible when portions of the functions of Windows Media Player 9 or higher are used. Entering ID3 tag: The Displayable ID3 tag is ID3 version 1.x. For the character code, refer to the List of Codes. Entering file and folder names: The code list characters are the only file names and folder names that can be entered and displayed. If you use any other character for entry, the file and folder names are not displayed correctly. They may neither be displayed correctly depending on the CD writer used. The unit recognizes and plays only those MP3/WMA which have the MP3/WMA extension (.MP3/.WMA). A file with a name entered with characters not on the code list may not play correctly. Writing files into a medium: When a medium containing MP3/WMA data is loaded, the unit checks all the data on the medium. If the medium contains a lot of folders or non-MP3/WMA files, therefore, it takes a long time until the unit starts playing MP3/WMA. In addition, it may take time for the unit to move to the next MP3/WMA file or a File Search or Folder Search may not be performed smoothly. Loading such a medium may produce loud noise to damage the speakers. ? Do no attempt to play a medium containing a non-MP3/WMA file with the MP3/WMA extension. The unit mistakes non-MP3/WMA files for MP3/WMA data as long as they have the MP3/WMA extension. ? Do not attempt to play a medium containing non MP3/WMA.
