There are two types of paper feed errors.
The obvious failure is when the paper gets jammed in the paper path.
The other failure is caused by paper not reaching a sensor in the time allotted for it to travel to the sensor. This manifests itself by reporting a jam but there is no paper found in the paper path. A Page Pick roller failure, for example. Sometimes all you have to do is clean the rollers with denatured alcohol to get the paper dust off of the rollers. Anything else and you have to get the printer serviced.
Place a mark on the top sheet of paper in the tray.
Print a job. If you get the error again, check the paper tray and see if the page with the marked page on it is still there.
If it is, then you know you have a paper pick problem. Start with the easiest things. Make sure you do not have to much paper in the input tray. This could block the release of the paper pick rollers and falsely report a paper jam.
Fan the paper to remove any static electricity from the paper. Sometimes this will cause the paper to stick together and again force a false paper feed error.

just recently had these problems
LED flashing E3 code and alarm light was solid. But dissapeared when opened the coved and came back on when closed the cover.
Also the when the cover was open the inks did not slide out to the left and stayed to the right side.
There was no paper jam, but error said paper jam.
1. I took a thick piece of paper, from like a paper folder ones, thick enough to go in the printer and not curl up when pushed..
2. turned off the printer and turned it back on.
3, while printer was turning on,and makings sound as it does normally when turning on, I pushed through the piece of paper and the rotors stoped for a millisecond.
4.the rotors started again and pushed out the paper by it self with out my force.
5. I let the printer get started. and then turned it off and then on.
6. this solved all of my problems.
this was the first problem ever with this printer in 3 years.,preety good printer.

I had the same problem for DAYS and there was no paper jammed at all. I went to the cannon site as a last ditch effort & the solution below fixed it. Just clean the rollers and the link tells you how. Good luck!
