Open Question

I have an older knipco type heater. It runs pretty good ,but the cone doesn't glow very much when it runs. I don't know if it is running rich or lean. Can you help me with fine tuning this?

SOURCE: air fuel mixture screw adjustment, forced air kerosene heater

Most ready heaters have a fuel pressure setting on the back of the heater near the fan. There should be two small plastic covers, looking directly at the back, the one on the left can be removed and a pressure gauge installed. The one on the right is slotted for adjustment of pressure. I think the correct pressure for that model is 3.0 lbs.

running it rich may cool your engine a BIT, but wou will also loose out on mpg(allthough a slight gain in power will be present) and throttle response.

SOURCE: i have a 85 gsxr 750 running rich on the left

Hi Chris,
You will have to recheck the float level (in the float chamber) of those two carburators, reset if necessary.
You may also have to reset the air-mixture screw for both of those carbs. Standard procedure to set htem is tighten them all the way in making sure not to over tighten to avoid damaging the sharp end of the screw, and thn to open 2 and a half to 3 turns.
You can thn reset them as the engine is running + -- either way.
Hope this helps!

Heater runs and heats, but it "coughs" while running and emits a flame along the cone.

because it is gas , i would advise getting an accredited gas fitter to find the fault
it could be a blockage in the jet , regulator but it needs a professional to look at it

Motor runs good but is running to rich. Any suggestions?

Yes, check for any air restrictions that would hinder the engine's ability to breathe, the air filter, a dirty or carboned up throttle body, maybe the idle air passages need cleaning. Running rich means too little air or too much gas.

You have throttle body injection? Observe the cone spray pattern of the gas out the bottom of the injectors. It should spray out in a fine mist cone pattern, landing on the throttle plate below it. You can observe with the engine idling and the air breather off. If you see any drips and not a cone pattern, the injectors need cleaning or replacing. Also observe when the engine is not running ,but just turned to ON: It should not show any drips. If it does, the injectors may be stuck partially open.

Another possibility is a bad MAP sensor, reading out of range.

Dont know what to do

When a CAT runs that hot it means the engine is running too rich. You can cause a fire. Make sure that all the cylinders are firing

Radiator cooling fans

i would assume more than likely that your exhaust is clogged some where more than likely the catalytic converter is clogged unbolt the exhaust pipes from the manifolds and let the car run for awhile (it will be extremely loud don't drive it this way u get pulled over) if manifolds dont glow replace catalytic converters and inspect rest of pipes for clogs
if manifolds still glow you more than likely are running way to rich check fuel pressure injectors etc.

Can i run diesel fuel in my m50a reddy heater

Yes you can run Diesel in this heater but you will have to turn the pressure up on the back of the pump.
You want the nose cone to be a good glowing orange and with Diesel you may need more air pressure to achieve the proper burning of the heater with the least amount of fumes.

I have spark and fuel going to the fuel rail but car wont start. It ran good a week ago then I started it drove about ten feet and it slowly died popped the hood and the catalytic converter was glowing red...

check your convertor to make sure it isnt clogged internally the cone in the convertor on that models tends to either cover over with age or melt and not allowing exhaust gas release through the exhaust system which in turn will keep compression in the cylinder head not allowing the engine to fire and run it's like putting a HUGE cork in each exhaust port

I have an older reddy heater pro 100 kerosene space heater,

You Must set the pump pressure quickly! If allowed to run with the nose cone a "bright" cherry red the welds will deterioate to the point that the end will separate from the combustion chamber. Individual sheet metal parts of the chamber are not available.

Learn how to properly set the air pump pressure
