Compaq Presario V2000 Screen went black

My laptop was fine till one day I turned it on and had a black screen. I connected it to an external monitor and all is well with that computer works fine. the little button on top left side that gets pushed and puts the computer in sleep mode when the lid is closed, if i play with that a little I can see the screen for a second till it goes into sleep mode. Before I buy a new LCD for it I just wonder if that button could be stuck or something making the screen black?

I forgot to mention that I can see the screen if I shine a flashlight on it.

thanks for your opinion! just didnt want to go spend $400 if it was in the long run just a switch or the inverter that I have seen mentioned.

Now HP said it would cost another $100 to get a new laptop to step up from what ive got........ so now i have to decide. I have checked the internet for places that sell LCD's for much less,im just not sure what company I can trust. I can install it myself as I had to take this one out to check for the number of mine. Any way to know if or what company would be best for getting a LCD? I would like to pay less for one but then I want it to be new not refurbished or used. From a reliable place.

I temporarily tried a different inverter and also a different LCD, and then laptop was taken to repair shop.

Now laptop has been returned to me...non-working... the repair shop tried another inverter and another LCD and LCD cable, the repair shop's conclusion was that there is a "obvious short in laptop"

My electrician boyfriend thinks that if there were a short that the battery wouldn’t charge.

It’s not old enough to be totaled, I still suspect that little lid button. Or the last thing that laptop did was get windows updates and hp updates. I am tempted to format and reinstall windows to see if it is some bad driver.

  • itsmeveve Apr 13, 2008

I cant get the bios on the external monitor, external monitor dosent show anything till the compaq screen comes on and the windows log on is the next thing that pops up. Before that nothing shows up on the external monitor.

  • itsmeveve Apr 14, 2008

Ive never been inside a laptop before, I have built desktops, Ive fought virus and Trojans, and some of my friends think im an expert at that sort of stuff. I am self taught and I usually get what i aim for when working with desktops.

When the laptop LCD quit, I contacted HP, and after some time of talking with the person I was told it is the LCD that went bad, and told the LCD was equal if not more money than replacing my laptop with a new one.

My first instinct was this button, or the updates that happened just before it quit.

I searched the WWW and found instructions to take apart my laptop to swap LCD's and learned what an inverter was, and I changed that out. Going on what I was told by HP.

After that I didn't know what to do since that didn't help my problem. This laptop is only about 2 years old, at a year old a key popped off and i sent it to HP for repair. When it came back in the box with the repaired laptop from HP was a card to extend the warranty. I called them up to extend it and they told me the price on the card was not for my type of computer. Being upset with them I didn't get any extra coverage.

Off to the computer store with my laptop I went, and left it there for a diagnostic. I just went to the store I always shop at and not a HP service center. I am not sure now if the results would be different if I went to an HP service center or not. That is another option.

I don't want a new laptop, I don't want Vista, I have my copy of windows xp on my laptop and don't care to buy another.

I have an electrician here and he is shy of the smallness of the laptop, but im going to see if he has and will test it as you say with the DC Meter. Maybe I can get him to do just that part.

I know how to get to BIOS, the BIOS on the laptop is very limited compared to others I have seen in the past, and I don't see (with my flashlight) any settings in there for changing it to external monitor, I have tried my Fn- f4 key, and played with the display button. Nothing has happened.

I do appreciate your help very very much!

Same description as al the others, however it did emit a nasty smell just befor it began to flicker. I'm getting by using the external monitor but would really like to keep my XP Wide Screen. I have two other machines at my disposal but the resolution is to high to read the fonts and when they are changed to a readable font the text is fuzzy.

    i have the same problem
everything she said is the same with my laptop
    how do i fix this

  • dvdnguyen200 Feb 25, 2009

I had the same problem, and replaced the inverter, but it did not work. I measured the HV, but no voltage. The lower input voltage is fine (18V). There something happen, that makes the inverter doesn't work? Someone above said have tried to replace the LCD? but it did not work? I think something wrong with main board ( button?) or firmware? Or something happened that the signal can't reach to the LCD.

I know this is stupied but I had the same problem and it is fixed now - here goes techies - I called HP and of course they were giving me the story out of warrenty - i could pay to talk to them and all the other stuff. They had no clue and neither did I. However in the discussion i had to give them the model number "turned the thing over to find it" When i opened it and tried again it worked. I then moved it and had the same problem - once again turned it over and it worked. I have no clue what I did but I am going to take it in to have it looked at. Can someone tell me what happened?

Fixed! Saw the screen with a flashlight, tested on an external vga - everything OK. Took a chance ordered an inverter $15.00 shipped on ebay! Laptop is working again, thanks Coldcut!

If it`s the same as the NX 9030 + various others with the same chassis, then change the switch, or unplug it and the backlight should come on. even if it`s not try it anyway, you`ve got nothing to lose, i do know that the lid switch on the nx9030 also turns off the backlight when the lid is closed and can stick in a closed position(it happened to me)

hpoe this helps...piratone

Coldcut's solution is good and should solve the problem. also check whether there is a supply coming to inverter board. ( typically 3.3volts and 5volts). if yes the check for lcd open/close switch problem.

  • Ganesh Prasad Apr 14, 2008

please check first for open/close switch located at the right side of the laptop below the lcd screen ( in some dv2000 models), also its location if different with models. please specify your laptops model no.( partno).

As you can see the screen with a flashlight then the lcd and video card and cable are fine,
That leave the inverter and the support cable to it.
if you installed another inverter then the lamps are bad, but you have to be certain the inverter is putting out HV, else the support cable and circuit that turn on the inverter is at fault. it is best to trouble shoot in the bios screen , and be certain that you have the brightness turned up.

if you know what keys enter into the bios hit them before it boots.
the keyboard may be marked "setup"
else its f2, f1, del , or just look it up.
the reason is that while it is in the bios the button should not make it go to sleep.
while in the bios you can send the screen to the monitor or lcd with the function /display.
if the switch makes the lcd fire then you are likely right and it needs replaced or removed if you want.
to get to it should be easy as its on the top of unit.
look up the disassembly of unit on how to get it , it either needs to be shorted or open to work , short it first, if no effect remove or open the wiring, if still no effect then it may be deeper,
as you have opened the system you should to reseat all the cables that deal with the lcd. if you have a meter monitor the supply voltage to the lcd inverter.it should have only 3 wires ~
it looks like you have been chasing this so much your not thinking clearly and just replacing items has not helped.
take it in step , your main tool will be a cheap dc meter.

My lid switch has lost its springiness. The monitor backlight goes off randomly. I had to take off the switch plate which covers the buttons above the keyboard to diagnose it. The lid switch actually rocks back when you push it down, and if I pull it forward the backlight comes back on. I've tried pushing on the connector to verify that it isn't the pressure on the board causing the fix. It really seems to be the rocker lid switch. My laptop is labeled V2000 but it is actually something like a V2600. Anyone know the part number for the lid switch?

I would like to hook up my compaq presario v2000 to an external monitor/tv What cord would I need and where would I plug it in?

Hi,
Connect the monitor cable to the D-type connector on the laptop. Once the monitor is connected to the laptop. Hold down the Fn key on the keybaord and tap on the F8 key to toggle the display on the external monitor

There are three stages of the Fn+ F8 key
1, Exterenal only
2. Laptop + External screen
3. Laptop only.

FS050UA , COMPAQ PRESARIO NOTEBOOK PC CQ50-210US the screen has lines and a black spot

Hi,
Turn on the notebook and press F10 to get into BIOS screen. Even if the lines and the black spot appears then the issue is with the internal hardware of the notebook.
To check further connect an external monitor to the notebook and press Fn and F4 keys on the keyboard to get the display on external monitor. If the external monitor display is fine then the issue is with the LCD screen or else the issue is with the Video card of the notebook.

no its not a driver you have a video chip getting ready to fail.on the v2000 it intergrated in to the mother board. soon you will be joining many other compaq v2000 and m2000 owners in the search for a mother board compaq has updated part numbers it a whole differant board for these units due to having a common failure rate of the original mother boards.Compaq know there was a over heating of the video chip that leads to failure but has not offered any assistance to there customers. john@johnslaptops.com

Compaq V2000 Screen went dark

Have you try external monitor? If it's still same, the LCD screen back light or the inverter of the LCD screen was faulty, but yours most likely the inventor of the LCD screen was faulty, it's only can be repaired by components level tech.
