VideoLAN aka VLC Player plays every media file in the world without need of additional codecs. I use VLC all the time, for several years now, and it's a great piece of software. Recommending it to everybody http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
These options are also available, but I haven't tested them so I can't vouch for them: you can get the 3GP player that will play your 3gp files http://www.free-codecs.com/3gp_player_download.htm
Or, you can convert 3gp files to avi http://www.pazera-software.com/products/3gp-to-avi-converter/ http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-3GP-Video-Converter.htm

There's no problem with the operating system. And please do not reinstall windows again. Its a known issue only for some types of videos even if its in the same format for example- 2 different files in AVI format ones working but the others not. This happens because some type of videos are only supported by 3rd party codecs which is not made by microsoft as windows media player is product of microsoft. Now you might also notice that the same video might be working in your friends computer or a different computer absolutely fine. Its just you would have to wait until it will download the update it self. SOLUTION:- Look m not a big fan of microsoft either. So do not depend on Windows media player.Simply download VLC PLAYER which is the best. Its small, plays all kinds of videos in all formats. The following is the link for the setup file of VLC PLAYER-:
You can either download a player that has all the codecs built in, like VLC player from videolan, this is my favourite media player (free).
You can download codec packs if you wish, just google codec download.
