I possess a 500LE that is almost dead. It had the famous firmware 2.17, and I tried to use a solution suggested by rhamphorinkx in order to change it: I inserted the files USB0002.CMD and USB0002.DAT of the firmware 1.61 in the directory USBTRANS of the GPS.
The loading of the new firmware didn't go to end correctly.
Now my 500 is lacking of firmware, it is not able to use the secret commands, and surely it wouldn't be disposed to accept a firmware different from the 2.17 one (by the way I do not possess this firmware).
I am able to introduce in it data through the serial port (through the USB port it's no more detected).
I possess another identical 500LE with firmware 2.17.
Do you know a way to unload the firmware from this second 500LE?
In particular, for a loading through the serial port, I think it would be better to have it in .hex format, but perhaps I should be able to do something also with the files USB0002.CMD and USB0002.DAT of the 2.17 version . Have you any suggestions at regard? Thx alot, take care Alberto

Hello, What is happening is your computers are not recognizing your unit. Means you have to update unit via the registered site for updates. Hello,
first Perform a hardware reset to return the minor settings of the GPS to the
original condition. Press the small "Reset" button on the side of the
unit for several seconds until it powers off and powers back on.
If that doesn't solve the problem, then it means you will have to perform a firmware upgrade to put the GPS back in order.
Download and install the Content Manager software available for free
from the Magellan support website. Connect your GPS to
your computer with a USB cable, and the software will automatically search for firmware updates for your GPS.
Here is support to copy and paste in your browser for Magellan.

You can try to update your GPS firmware.
Before you update your Magellan eXplorist 500 firmware or install a custom basemap, Magellan recommends that you backup all of your GPS data.
Click here to download the firmware update (Version 2.57)
Connect your Magellan GPS unit via the USB drive. Double-click on the update file to begin the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions .
Jeff, I had the same problem with my explorist 500. Your unit lost the "BASEMAP.MGI " file. You will need to get a copy of that file. Then install it.
Try this site http://imhz.com/2006/05/my-explorist-is-screwed.html
(I would recomend all explorist GPS owners copy and save that file and store it in a safe place. I have mine on a thumb drive).
A black screen, actually purple, means that a firmware upgrade was unsuccessful. You can try to fix it by reloading the firmware, but you are most likely not going to be successful using the USB 'binary'firmware that is available.
There is some 'text' HEX firmware available on the yahoo Explorist user group. To use it though, with your USB cable, you will need to make a small circuit with 1 chip. That site shows how to do it. I am in the process of doing that for an Explorist 400 for a friend. Others have said this is the only to recover such a lost GPS. I'll keep you informed of my success when it happens. I'll probably be sending the circuit/cable I build along to other friends but could possibly fix your for you if you like.
I solved this problem by gonig to the secret menu by holding the nav + power. I entered the value # 95 in the menu. This will let you format the memory area in the unit then I down loaded the latest firmware update from magellan.com and installed it on the
unit.I had already made a copy of the files on the unit in my hard drive so i copied the files back to my unit so that i did not loose anything important like poi's and geocaches etc...
PS when I did the firmware up date the base map must have been restored.
