I had this problem, and it is to do with the positionof the mousepad. As you type you thumbs and lower part of you hands will hover over and touch the mousepad. I jus tturned the mousepad off and use and external mouse. My firend has just bought a later model and i noticed that they have moved the mouse pad.

I'll cut to the chase (from personal experience):
1) upgrade ALPS touch pad/mouse driver - settings do not matter, contrary to earlier suggestions);
Per Acer's Level 2 Support:
2) remove the battery and run the system on the power supply - test the mouse & touch-pad.
3) if still under warranty (and even if out) contact Acer's support, explain to level 1 support the problem you are having, and inform them that Level 2 has the solution, so please have you transferred to them. I was told that a replacement battery will be shipped in 1-2 days, and the problem should be solved.
After performing step 2, I could feel a difference in the mouse & touch-pads, as well as it no longer opened and closed windows on its own, nor acting as if possessed.
G'luck and I hope this helps.

I too have a 5520 with a mouse with an attitude - bought late March 08. Although I am a hardcore geek, I have not had the time to mess with it up to now. Last night, I udated the driver, and while it did help some, one problem remained: activating icons/links/buttons on its own (yes, as if possesed). Today I called Acer USA, was transferred to Level 2 support (where everybody speaks geek ..8?) ...) and the problem was solved in <5 minutes. I was asked to remove the battery, while the system ran on the power supply. The mouse behaved!!!!!
Apparently, a replacement battery will fix a problem the touch-pad has with Vista!!!!!!!
For those out of warranty, I would recommend removal of the battery, running the system on the power supply, then reinstalling the battery. Also, updating the mouse driver is on the MUST DO list.
As a system builder, I've seen some really screwy stuff, but this has them all beat.
I hope this helps some of you with this problem!
