Question about Sony Alpha DSLR-A350K Digital Camera

1 Answer

Does not focus

I have my sony alpha DSLR-A350 for only 15 months. Since last week it does not focus anymore. All images are blurry and out of focus. I tried different lenses, a tele zoom and I even bought a new tamron lens to get rid of this problem. Did not work, images are still blurry.

Sony charges $ 288 for the repair. I found another online repair shop (Teleplan camera repair) that would fix it for $102. Can I trust these businesses or do I need to send it to Sony?
    Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately this means that the focus detection system within the camera body has a fault. There is nothing you can do on a DIY basis to fix it, the only remedy is to get an authorised Sony repair centre to rectify it. If you have an extended warranty then read the documentation to see how to make a claim, but if not then the one year Sony warranty has expired and you'll have to pay for repairs yourself. Sony have a policy of fixed cost repairs and if you're in the UK then no matter what the cause of the fault is you'll be charged £114.56 at the present time. Not cheap, but a lot cheaper than a new camera and certainly cheaper than trying to solve the problem by buying additional lenses. You'll need to download and fill in the Sony repairs form, click here for the UK version or search for the version for your own country. The only other option is to sell your camera "as is" as a spares or repairs item and use the funds towards a replacement. If you do get Sony to repair it, then check and test your camera VERY carefully and thoroughly afterwards: repairs are guaranteed, but only for ninety days.Every repair I've had done has lasted fine, but my personal experience of the UK repair centre is that an unacceptable number of repairs have been poorly executed and had to be immediately returned for further attention. Of the faulty repairs which I've spotted, Sony have always eventually rectified the problem satisfactorily. Good luck and I hope that I've been of assistance.

You don't have to send it to Sony, but if you do then you know that they have the knowledge, tools, model-specific trained staff and spare parts. They should also be fully up to date with the latest service bulletins.

The company you've mentioned have quoted a suspiciously low price for the job. Labour and the parts alone cost more than your quote, although fixed price servicing is always a game of numbers and averages: the jobs a repairer loses on are outweighed by all the jobs where just a quick adjustment, a dab of solder, or a really cheap and quick to fit part was needed.

I'm not advising you to avoid them, but ask a few searching questions before committing your camera to them. Once any company has your camera in their possession, and in pieces, it becomes a bit difficult to argue if they suddenly announce that far more parts are needed and the cost must treble, or that they need to wait x number of weeks for parts to arrive. You'll need to know how experienced they are with your model, whether they carry the spares or can get them within 48 hours, and whether there are any exclusions to the fixed price servicing.

I have a sony a 230 camera the halfway focus won't work anymore, any fixes?

Check that the camera or lens AF/MF switch hasn't moved to MF.
This will turn off the auto focus on the camera.
You can see them both in this photo.

It's probably a malfunctioning CCD Imager, but before you send off your camera for repair, try to see if the user manual has anything in regards to centering the image:

Hello, I'm having troubles with my camera, a sony alpha 580 dslr. I try to take a picture and the shutter stays down a few seconds when I don't have it set to that and it is making these awful grinding...

sounds like the shutter chain is slipping, or shutter is sticking, this does not look good. you may need to have the body replaced, usually camera shops will tell you that the repair costs more than the replacement.

i would take to a sony dealer for further advice, I assume you are still under garantee you should be ok. as this model only came onto the market last august. and usually has 24 months cover on parts.

I hope this was useful.

It is likely to be an issue with the auto focus in the lens. You will get the grinding noise even if you switch the camera on in manual focus, but not if you take pictures in manual focus.

LCD - Focus

DSLR camera was not made to be used as a point and shoot camera and you cant preview the shot before taking a picture. You are to use the eye piece to focus right. Also before taking a picture, push the exposure button just a little to let the camera focus right.
