Remember that early Singer machines would only sew properly with number 40 or 50 mercerised thread, anything else and all sorts of things happen, top tension should be about 4 or 5

Sorry, I made a mistake. You can view the manual online for free but it costs about 5GBP to download. Perhaps you can save the images onto your computer by left-clicking on your mouse?

no, you need the blade in place and cutting to give an even cut fabric edge. Set up for a three thread using the right hand needle, take out the left hand needle. move blade over to the right so it is cutting wide. Most overlockers there is also a thread finger you need to change on the foot, or a little lever you flick to move this finger forward into the stitching area. Check this on your manual as each make is a bit different.
If you can source it, put wooly nylon thread into the upper looper (knot it onto existing thread and just chain it through, the knot should go through the looper eye fine). Now turn the tension on top looper down so it is looser and tighten up tension on bottom looper, so needle 5, top looper 2 and bottom looper about 7.

Now test serge, the fabric cut edge should be wider than the overlocking seam so the fabric rolls under inside the stitching. Adjust the two looper threads so that this is happening, you want the bottom looper thread to nest right up against the needle stitch and the top looper thread to wrap all the way around too.

Once you've got this happening, turn the stitch length down to 0.5, to close the stitching right up. On some fabrics you'll need to adjust the differential feed too if the fabric is "waving" a bit.

Uneven stitches or sometimes loose when serging could indicate that one of the tension devices is faulting, so if this machine is not new and its doing this, it could need a service. Can you get a regular smooth three or 4 thread seam out if it???

It is always good to just recheck the threading path, make sure the thread aerial is up and that a thread hasn't got caught back on the thread stand somewhere if you're getting something wonky happening, threads stream off overlocker cones through the machine so anything wrong in the thread path will throw off the stitching.

***Upper tension setting
*** Put the pressure foot up.
***As you are threading give little tugs to check for snags. Snags must be fixed.
***When finished threading (not the needle) put the pressure foot down.
***Check the tension by starting at zero and increase the tension slowly and give small tugs to see if the tension is rising. (This is all done without the needle being threaded)
***When you feel comfortable this is working then thread the needle and set the tension at four.
***Set the bobbin tension. Attachment gives instructions.
Now that all of the tension has been set you can try for

Check the machine's paperwork. It could still be under warranty.

Hopefully, your sister oiled per the manual instructions. Oiling a computerized machine is not advisable unless the instructions say to do so.

Ask your sister to try something:
Remove the top thread from the machine.
Install a brand new needle (verify it is facing the correct direction).
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread--confirm it follows the correct thread path.
Set the top tension to the midway point.
Re-test the machine.

Singer user guide starlet 496

Many Singer machine manuals are available here: http://www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals . The 496 is not available. However, the manual for the Starlet 495 is available: http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/8a78e29267b106e9d2902ac0f6758edf694e6d61.pdf . Since Singer doesn't change the machines significantly, this manual may help you.

If the 495 manual isn't enough, this site seems to have the manual for sale: http://www.manualsdrive.com/captching.php?lang=en&search=SINGER+STARLET+496+USERS+GUIDE .

I hope this helps.

Singer quantum futura ce200 - thread breaks

The needle thread breaks
1. the needle thread is not threaded properly
2. The needle thread tension is to tight
3. The needle is bent or blunt
4. The needle is incorrectly inserted
5. The needle thread & the bobbin thread are not set under the presser foot when starting to sew
6. the threads were not drawn to the rear after sewing
7. The thread is either to heavy or to fine for the needle

Machine is jamming

You need to remove the bobbin from the "race" by following the instructions in the manual. Give it a good clean and remove any bits of fluff and thread. Remove the upper thread also andmake sure that the tension wheel is clear of any broken threads and is on the correct setting. It may have been threaded wrong. The hand wheel not turning sounds like the bobbin area is jammed also.

Singer Starlet 353 Thread tension

you need to do a tension assembly check.

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";}Tension assembly test. To do this test. Pull the threadthrough the tension assembly and test it to make sure the tension is workingcorrectly.
(To do this test, adjust your tension setting to normal or medium or 5 orsomething in the middle. Raise the presser foot and pull the thread through thetension. It should pull easily!! Lower the presser foot and pull the thread. Itshould pull noticeably harder.)
If it doesn’t work this way then you probably have a pieceof thread or lint stuck inside the tension discs. To remove it, turn thetension to 0 zero and raise the presser foot.Using a small screwdriver, openthe space between the discs and spray with canned or compressed air. The stuffshould come out. Do the tension test again to make sure you got everything andthen try sewing again.
