It sounds like the drivers have gone missing for the dvd drive
you can try system restore or if you have Win Xp Cd
you can try a First Repair to fix the problem

How to get device manager to recognize SuperMulti DVD Burner? The player is installed (or was) and worked, but it suddenly vanished from device manager.

You should open the case and see if the power cable and sata cables are secured on the drive..... it is possible that the DVD drive control board has died. Considering there are many DVD burners out there for less than $20 the replacement should be cheap and simple.

Here's how to open and replace a CD/DVD drive from the HP site:

I have a hp pavilion dv-6000 and my problem is the machine works very well, everything fine, but does not recognize the dvd drive (it does not appear in the computer icon), i checked everything, and a...

Simple test: boot in the BIOS and in there check if the dvd drive is recognized. If it's not then it's hardware and most likely the dvd drive is dead - replacing it will cost you $30. If it is recognized then Windows is at fault; since fixing it requires messing with the registry you should better just reinstall Windows from scratch.

Hp pavilion zv6000 wont recognize dvd+r

Hi Terry,

The answer is pretty simple, the ZV series is about 4 years old, back then DVD manufacturers decided which formats they would support as it was too expensive to make desktop drives, let alone, laptop drives that supported all formats. That drive only works with DVD-R and I believe DVD-RW. If you want to burn other formats, the laptop will only support them if you add an external drive of a newer make.

Note: Virtually all current models support ALL DVD formats and many support BluRay as well.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Dvd drive will read/play dvds but will not recognize a cd

go to safemode and try reading CDs in safemode. If your burner still can't read CDs then it's most likely bad. You could get an external usb burner.
