Question about Dell GG057 for Axim X51, X51v

1 Answer

I have a Dell axim x 51 v with Anywhere Map installed (aviation gps). The software and axim work great together. Had to do a hard reset and now cannot get the axim to connect with the gps receiver.

Your solution did not fix the issue. The GPS receiver is Bluetooth. I have gone into settings through the anywhere map and selected several com ports and baud rates with no success. There is also a button to auto connect to BT. When I check this, it states the device not not equiped with BT?????

In settings on the axim, the axim has located the receiver, com port 8 (bluetooth) but after I put in a code and hit finish it loses connection and will not work!

  • dands1 Feb 01, 2010

This is exactly what I have tried. I tried to put that in my last post. (Not only does this not work, but I cannot hit next without putting in a password). Then the connection is lost with the receiver!??

  • dands1 Feb 02, 2010

This has happened before and I contacted Dell. Tried that this time, but they no longer service the axim, too old. I can't remember what they instructed me to do, but it was not the standard connection you described above.

Went to another web site and they had the solution. Thanks for the help.

Check the settings for the gps connection, either bluetooth or serial, port is com4 and baud rate 9600bps

If bluetooth, (which i dont know if the axim has) you set the ppc as visible and bluetooth on, then set the gps unit into pairing mode, if asked for a pin on the axim, enter 0000

    1. Use your stylus to tap "Start" and then "Settings." This opens a new window. Here you can tap on the "Connections" tab. The "Connections" tab lists the various options you have for linking your X51 with other devices and networks.

    2. Step 2
Tap "Bluetooth" to get to the "Devices" tab. Open the "Devices" tab and find the "New Partnership" option. Tap your stylus on "New Partnership" to start the Axim X51 looking for other wireless devices in range. When it's finished, the names of these devices will be displayed on a list.

    3. Step 3
Locate the name of the device you want to connect to, tap on the name and tap "Next."

    4. Step 4
Enter a passkey if desired. When not using passwords, just leave the space blank and tap your stylus on "Next." Note: without a passkey, just about anybody with a Bluetooth device can connect to your Axim and rifle through the data you have stored on board.

    5. Step 5
Tap "Finish" to establish the connection

there could be a fault with the receiver or axim then, are they both BT2.0 or BT1.2 etc?

If they are different speeds this may be the problem. Not all devices are compatible especially older units. Sorry it is difficult to diagnose if the standard instructions do not work.

Ok, I think you should try a soft reset, if that doesnt work, try a hard reset. If these don't work then I am going to suggest the axim, or the bt receiver, are faulty.

    Soft Reset

When you do a soft reset, the device deletes any data or active programs that have not been saved in the flash memory. In other words, your saved files and programs are not deleted. Try a soft reset if the device does not respond when you tap the display or press a button. The soft reset is disabled when Axim is in full power off mode.

To do a soft reset, use the stylus to press the reset button.

    Hard Reset

NOTICE: When you do a hard reset, you lose all the data stored in your device Flash memory, and any programs that you installed on your device.

    Do a hard reset if:

    • You want to restore the device to factory default settings.
    • You forget your password and need to reset it.
    • Your device is experiencing severe operational problems and you have already attempted a soft reset.

NOTICE: It is strongly recommended that you back up your data before you do a hard reset.

    To do a hard reset:

    1. Press the Power button to turn the Axim unit On.
    2. Press and hold the Power button down while using the Axim stylus to press the Reset button at the same time.
    3. Release the Power button and the Reset button. The To clear all data in the memory screen appears.
    4. Press the Contacts button on the Axim to delete all of the data in the memory of the Axim handheld.
    5. Press the Mail button on the Axim to cancel the operation without losing data.

A "soft" reset clears all open programs and "reboots" the Pocket PC. When the Pocket PC powers back up, you'll start with all active programs closed and the device ready to use. This procedure is intended to reset the Pocket PC if it is malfunctioning or has become bogged down. This reset is also sometimes necessary after software is installed. A soft reset is the Pocket PC equivalent to restarting your Desktop or Laptop. The Dell Axim X50 and X50v can be soft reset by pressing the recessed button on the rear of the unit above the battery. A "hard" reset wipes the RAM and returns the Pocket PC to its factory specs. In effect, the Pocket PC will be just as it was when you purchased it. All data entered, preferences set or software installed (other than ROM updates) on the Pocket PC after purchase will be lost after a hard reset and will have to be transferred or reinstalled via ActiveSync. The Dell Axim X50 Series Pocket PCs can be hard reset by performing the following procedure: With the X50 turned on, press and hold the power button at the top of the unit. While holding the down power button, use the stylus tip to press the "Reset" button mentioned above. Allow the screen to fade to off. Release both buttons. The unit will power back on and display a menu to confirm the hard reset request. The Axim will be hard reset, just as it was when it left the factory hope this helps

Axim 50/51 wont pass blue startup screen

There could be two possible problems with this device.

If you have to remove the unit to shutdown, then the ROM chip holding the information for the bootup of the unit may need to be replaced.

The other possible problem is that the battery consumption of the unit may be greater than what the battery is rated at.

Either way, it will have to go in for repair.

When you connect the DELL to the computer, is the USB detected? If so, open Microsoft Activesync and verify Allow USB Connections is checked.

Date keeps resetting after powerdown

It sounds as if there is a small internal battery - something like a watch battery that should be keeping the clock going - I couldn't confirm this online but this was common in gps systems. It shouldn't be too hard to get to, probably have to take the back off, but it should be easy to replace. Hope this helps, please post again if not :)

Instaling New Software

Don't know about that software specifically, but of those 3 choices, try the Compaq. The Axim's processor is backwards compatible with the one in the Compaq. (Well, it's the same as the one in the LATEST model HP, but usually when you see those three choices, it's to signify the 3 different processors each had. HP's latest model used the same as the Compaq, but their older models didn't..) Hopefully they aren't checking for specific devices, but just processor type.. Now, there is some software that is written specifically for the Compaq Ipaq because of it's video chipset, but not much.. (Tomb Raider comes to mind)..

Axim after a hard reset!

Well to make a long story short, after the hard reset I lost all data, and I put the axim in the cradle and it sync-ed but I had to create a new name for it, and it never brough the software that I had originally installed on the unit back... is that common and everytime we'll do a hard reset on it, will we have to re-install all the software and assing a new name to the unit, if so than it is ridiculous!!!

Dell Axim 5 + TomTom navigator GPS ?

for those in the States at least, the economics. Many new vehicles here come with GPS and mapping options today for a nominal amount. I was also looking at this Garmin portable. I am not familiar with what is available in Europe though, I know the cellular technology is far ahead of the States. I just thought I would throw this out there. Good luck with your efforts.
