It Is Mostly due to a cooling problem or over working problem, for cooling you should check your fan if it is working correctly, also try to work using your laptop in a cooler place (Thats good for its parts), for over working problem, try not to open it more than 4 continuous hours.

The laptop screen flickersand turns grey, it also get hard to see. It gets worse the longer the laptop is on. The fan seems to be running much more and a load grinding noise came from the fan a few months...

You could try using compressed air to clear out the fan, but most likely your system is overheating and the longer you go without fixing it the worse and more permanent issues it will cause

Hi, I installed the windows service pack 2 on my ibm t30 and when it asked me to restart I did, but nothing comes on. The screen is blank and there is no sound. The fan just whirls away but the hard disk...

The hard disk may needs reseating so it makes proper electrical connection or the hard disk decided to fail at this time.
If the laptop does not boot up after reseating the hard drive, try going into the BIOS and check if the BIOS detects the hard disk, if the BIOS connot detect the hard disk then most likely the hard disk has failed.

Making noises like motor dragging

First find out whether the sound comes... A) from the cooler/fan (where hot air is blown out through the holes) - open the case, clean dust and lubricate it with bicycle lubricant/oil, or if it is totally damaged search ebay for "Averatec 3200 fan or cooler". B) or from the hard disk (deeper in the case, usually a hot place) - there is much less probability that hard disk makes the noise - but if it does, it may be a symptom that your disk is dying, to make sure what's going on test the hard disk with: http://hddscan.com/ - it may be time to back up your files and buy a new one (but most probably cooler/fan is making the noise). ----------------------------- P.S. If this helped you to solve the problem (or at least brought some clarification) - rate this solution with 4 thumbs up! But before you would give a negative rating - post a comment, so I could improve my solution to satisfy your needs. Thank you!

Fan is noisy -loud wheezing sound. No dust. Banging on case sometimes stops the noise.

The fan has a noisy/worn bearing, I recommend replace the fan.
Banging the laptop base is not recommended, you could damage the hard disk.

Is it normal for my laptop to blow hot air from the blower fan and doing some noise every 20-30 seconds?

Not sure which laptop you have but this it is common for this to occur. The noise is the internal cooling fan coming on and this is why you get hot air coming out. In warm conditions some laptops have their fans on all the time.

Whirring Sound

It's probably your Hard Drive (as you suspect) , as other than the fan(s) and optical drive(s) the only other moving part would be the Hard Drive. You may want to start backing up your data and shopping for a larger, faster HD, if it is failing. Due to the heat issues with laptops it's pretty common that Hard Drives lose their lubrication and begin wearing out their bushings/bearings (which would make noises). Just make sure you have eliminated the other possibilities. You can find software to monitor the temperature and speed of your hard drive to help isolate it as the problem also.

Clacking noise hard drive on HP Pavilion dv2700 Laptop

Laptop hard drives can be a bit louder than the new desktops and because you're closer may be more noticable. The sound from that youtube is about normal - this video is the sound of the heads crashing - mechanical drive failure. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRj6dP1Pi1Q
Just to be safe - BACKUP your important data and if you don't have the install disks, make a set.
