Question about Toshiba Satellite A105 Notebook

1 Answer

LCD Screen stops working after a while

Here is the problem:
When I turn my laptop on the screen works perfectly - after a while - this is a random amount of time - the screen will change to anything from lines to gray lines, and then go blank.
The back light continues to work - and the screen responds to the brightness buttons.
The wireless card has a huge effect on the amount of time it takes for the screen to fail - from about an hour with the wireless card off - to about 10 minutes with it on.

Both the VGA and the S-video work on tv and computer screens after Laptop LCD stops working.

Tried to see if there are any loose connections in the screen area (took screen apart checked all connections there).

Any other ideas how this can be fixed?

    Aviorix,
Thanks for the fast and helpful answer.
Considering my computer is no longer under warranty and I don't live in the U.S. going to a service center will cost me more than the laptop.

    so my questions are:
how hard would this problem be to fix myself? I am not a pro - but I am very good at following instructions (was able to take the screen off and put it back - for example - without much trouble). Also would you be able to give my instructions on how to do it??

If this solution is not a good one, meaning it's something that should not be attempted by non pros - do you think using an external screen would work? meaning if I get a screen and plug it in - is there any reason why it would stop working (I know it doesn't in the short run - hour or 2 but what about long run.. days/weeks)...
    Thanks,

ok, one more piece of info just to make things interesting -
I put an UBUNTU (7.10) cd into the computer to see if maybe it will work - it ran for 30 minutes, with the wireless card on, and there were no problems, I decided to restart and see what would happen - as soon as I shut it off the screen went black, popped out the CD (as it is supposed to do when it's done turning off) and I restarted the computer - after doing so I put the cd back in and turned it back on.. the screen was blank for a while but I could see it was loading -
It loaded up the Ubuntu installation screen when it was done - looking completely normal!! meaning right now I have the computer screen running 100% (with the extra graphic stuff running as well) off the Ubuntu CD.

I don't know if this mens anything - but it sure seems amusing to me.

Any ideas?? could this be a software issue??

    didn't really understand that answer.

Just to clarify: I am running Windows XP SP2 on the laptop. The Ubuntu experiment was because I had it around and I know it uses different drivers for the video card. I don't want to install Ubuntu on it at this time - I (unfortunately) need windows for my work related stuff.

I have the exact same problem on my Satellite A105-S4084, and I had ubuntu and xp running before I had this problem. Current situation is, regardless of the OS I'm running on the computer, I'm having the same problem.

Your explanation quite clear and understandable that there are some weak shield area and contact issues at Displays connector side. It sound shield/ground issue rather than loose connection. Check the shielding from connection on board to the display module. You may use shielding tape if you have experience to repair electronic devices. You may also take to the Toshiba authorized service center (http://pcrepair.toshiba.com). Please post your question if you need further assistance

Good Luck

Yes that a tiny percentage too, Graphic acceleration, frequency and the software of the graphic card also can make sense. By my experience Ubuntu wont have problem to run on the computer that you have. But it will be better with fresh partition.

When starting computer screen immediately starts flashing colors. Nothing else. Then stops. And glitches randomly.

Turn off your pc and connect another monitor. If the external monitor works fine then the screen cable is damaged or your laptop's LCD needs replacement.

What can I do to fix my hp pavilion tx2000 because it shows a black screen when I turn it on but everything else works fine and it even worked perfect when I connected it to another monitor by vga

You might have either a faulty LCD cable or screen inverter board.
The LCD cable transfers data signal from the motherboard & video card to the LCD screen. It also supplies high voltage DC power to the screen inverter board. The screen inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. It converts low voltage DC power to high voltage AC power needed for the backlight lamp.

Vertical lines on my lcd laptop screen

It's the connector problems.
If you know what to do, I can guide you:

First, remove the screw all over the LCD case, then you can see the connector, and flexible cables.
Second, remove the keyboard unit(by removing all screw on the unit), after removed, find the edge of the LCD cables, then you can see the connector.

The solution:
1.Try clean this two connector with soft brushes ( paint brush is good ), by removing the cable first, then clean the flexible connector using wet tissue ( use the alcohol ).

2. If still exist, you need to replace the flexible with new ones.

Screen is black but computer works perfect.

When this happens it means the back light needs to be replaced. The back light is a light bulb that lights up the screen from behind the LCD display.

Monitor black Replaced lcd inverter

Hi,
The Inverter just proved that the power up is just fine, and Video Card are just in perfect shape. Try to see if you can finde a replacement for the ccfl in the screen.

CCFL is Cold Cathode Flouroscent Lamp, a type of lighting LCD screens use to ulluminate the screen.

Try to turn on you laptop, you will then flash a light on the screen, you will notice there is display, only dimmed. This should work after you replace them just fine. :)
