Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Two days ago I smelled what seemed like a burned motor. Yesterday we noticed the freezer compartment was thawing. It's a two compartment frig, and the refrigerator side seems to still be cooling. How difficult is it to replace the motor?

First you need to determine which motor you think is bad. There is a compressor motor which is underneath and around back behind the cardboard cover. If it's not running more than likely the fridge is not cold because it cools both the freezer and fridge.(except in sub zero models and a few others which have separate systems for the freezer and fridge.)
To replace the compressor requires a qualified tech to capture the freon and recharge the system after replacing the compressor.

Another motor is the condenser fan which is also under the fridge near the compressor. It runs when the compressor runs. If it's not running the efficiency of the freezer and fridge will be greatly reduced. This fan can be replaced by a floor fan blowing on the same area until the fan is replaced. It's a job most people can do themselves.

Another motor is in the freezer. It circulates the cold air in the freezer and blows it to the fridge side. If it's not working the freezer will stay cold for the most part but the fridge side will get lots warmer. It's located in the freezer behind the rear cover. It runs when the compressor runs but it will cut off with the door open and entire system will cut off when it's in the defrost mode.
A model number is very important for someone to have in order to help you in diagnosing your problem.

It's usually stamped on a small tag in a visible location on your appliance.

I smelled an electrical burning smell and noticed that my freezer items were thawing. Is it the motor?

If your refer is over four years old and a Kenmore good odds are higher than not that the compressor has failed.

I have the same problem with my Kenmore refridgerator

To completely clean a frig of bad smells you will need to remove the back cover of frig and freezer compartment to access all areas. I operated a used appliance store for years and had all manner of stinky refrigerators to deal with so what we did was take out all panels and clean out with bleach and water solution. This took care of most odors. Hope this helps.

Burned electrical smell from the freezer compartment

I would check the defrost thermostat usually a button type switch with 2 wires on it mounted to the freezer coil. Size depends on type ; 1 type is about quarter size, 1 is about dime size, and electronic sensor (not had one burn out but the board could smell like your description but I believe these are not in the freezer section).

I have had these cook out and smell up the freezer section before. And if they go out guess what it wont defrost either. If your fan motor goes out it might smell and wont cool all over but the frost should be minimal.

Also a bad defrost heater could make a smelly situation it is usually a black rod or aluminum colored and the rubber ends can burn and make a smell.
If you find its the heater, I would replace the defrost thermostat as well. Its suppose to cut off the heater before it gets too hot.

If this helps you find your problem please rate me as high as possible if not please post back with more information as to what you did find. Thanks for using fix ya and good luck.
