If there is power to the motor then it should run. It could be the PCB, if you have power to it and not to the motor, then it is bad. Just start at the motor with a voltmeter and go from there to see where you are losing the voltage. Is the hose want pushed all of the way in the place that it goes? There is a safety switch on alot of this type of vacuum. The idea is so the brush roll won't turn when the hose is out and is upright.

Beater bar making a loud noise

Our DC33 was making the same ratcheting sound immediately upon placing the cleaner/brush head on the carpet. We carefully pulled the beater/brush bar out of the vacuum. Once removed, we pulled the black plastic end nearest the belt off of the center rod. We discovered hair wrapped around each end of the center rod. After the hair was removed and the clean/brush bar was re-installed, the vacuum ran flawlessly. Hope it works as well for you as it did for us.

My Dyson DC 14 is making the horrible "ratcheting"sound only when the brush is engaged on the carpet setting. I have cleaned the brush, so there are no obstructions, the canister is empty and...

Something is causing the brush to slow down, either it is full of hair or debris or the brush itself is wearing out and may need changed. The noise you are hearing is the motor protector keeping it from burning up becuse there is some type of drag on the brush. If there is no issues with the brush then I would suspect the clutch assembly is worn and needs replaced. Here is a diagram for you to look at and go from there.

The power head for doing rugs has stopped turning.

A clog usually only affects the vacuum action. If the brush is not turning, make sure the motor driving it still runs. Remove the bottom plate and take out the brush assembly--check the end bearings for being bound-up with debris and the brush surface clear of debris. Clean the bearings with a Q-tip, then lightly oil them inside with 3-1 oil or similar light oil. Make sure the brush turns freely when returned to it's place. If ok, install the drive belt paying attention to any necessary twists. Replace the bottom plate and test. If the driving motor doesn't work, try turning the shaft by hand. If bound-up and it isn't caused by wound debris, the motor probably needs to be replaced. Hope this helps!

My machine ran over some string, made a funny noise and emitted some smoke, the hand suction pipe at the rear works perfectly, the motor runs fine, but the front of the vacuum will not work.thankyou very...

the string bound up the beater bar (brush), keeps the belt stationary, and the motor spindle is just rubbing against the belt and melting it. remove the belt guard, remove the brush, and the belt. clean off the brush bearings (at the ends of the brush) of the string and make sure the ends spin freely from the brush. replace the belt with a new one, and put it all back together.

DC15 Animal brush motor not working?

Just had the same problem. Switches and motor checked ok, then found the circuit board on the left hand side of cleaner. The fuse (on the board) looked ok, but when removed and checked for continuity I found it had blown. The problem I have now found is that the fuse cannot be ordered only the complete board. Hope it gets the brush roller going again.

    hello lilbutmunch1,
The brush is motor/belt driven so you probably either broke the belt or it shifted off the motor or brush shaft. I suggest you unplug it,flip it over and look for screws that hold the baseplate together.. remove those screws and seperate the baseplate to gain access to the brush and motor head. Once open, it should be fairly obvious what the problem is.. a broken belt, a belt that has shifted or the brush won't spin freely due to an obstruction. Hope this helps..
