The router's SSID, passphrase (ie encryption) is configured in the router's wireless configuration. This information is needed to configure the wireless card in the 2nd computer so it can connect to the wireless router.
Please click on this link for my instructions on how to secure your wireless network, configure the wireless router and the wireless card in the 2nd computer ;-

I got a new laptop and am trying to connect to the internet, but it is asking me for the Network Security Key. I don't know where to find it. Can you help??

Network security key is a encryption key.

Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

Have D-Link 655, had no problems with the my itouch linking to the internet. But then my daughter put some type of security on the router so my neithbors can't use my internet. Everything will still...

Let's try working on the iPod Touch first. It might fix the problem.
Only try this if you know the security code/passphrase/key that your daughter used to secure your network.
On the iPod Touch, go into Settings.
From Settings, tap "WiFi"
From the list of WiFi networks, you should see your router's name (SSID) listed. Tap on the blue circle with the right-arrow all the way at the right (do not tap on any other part of the line that contains your SSID)
At the top of the resulting screen, you should have a button for "Forget This Network". Tap that button and confirm the Forget by tapping the red Forget button
The information for this network should disappear, so click the "WiFi Network" button at the top of the screen
Your SSID should again be displayed in the list. This time tap on the middle of the entry for your SSID and type the passphrase or key that your daughter used to secure your network and tap the "Join" button.
If all went well and the passphrase or key was accepted, then press the Home button on the front of the iPod Touch and see if you are now able to get on the Internet.
If you get a message that you were not able to join the network, try typing the passphrase or key again until it accepts it.
Please reply back to me with your results. If this does not work, please wait before you rate my answer and instead reply back with your results and I will work with you further.
Thanks for using FixYa and Happy New Year.

Cant figure out how to connect to xbox live?

there is a way to reset the modem but you will lose your configuration and you would have to start all over again.
on the back of the modem where you connect the cables there is a tiny hole it may say reset. with the modem on, go ahead and stick a pen, toothpick or something of that nature in to the reset hole and hold it for about 10 seconds, you would see the lights go out and come back on. at that moment go ahead and release the tiny button and wait for modem to come back on. At this point you can go ahead and reconfigure it, you have to enable the wireless feature, enable you password (both set up and configuration), rename your network, etc. DO NOT keep the default settings and try to use WPA instead of WEP is harder to crack. for you to do all of this you have to connect your computer to the modem with a cable and type the address to access it or open ie and type homeportal in the address bar. it should take you to the configuration page (if it is a 2wire modem).

if it works for you, don't forget to rateme

Forgot password to log on for my wireless connection trying to add my Wii and now cant even get my laptop back online

You can check the passphrase when you access the router page:
  • Open a Web browser and type or; the 2Wire Home page opens.
  • Click the Home Networking tab at the top of the 2Wire Home page.
  • Click on Wireless Settings. then click EDIT SETTINGS located on the right panel.
  • Here you will be able to fine the setting for your wireless connection
  • You can change the SSID, Wireless Channel, Wireless Security, and Network Key
  • If the Wireless Security Key uses the default, the Passphrase is the 10 digits located underneath the router under the S/N.
Thanks for using Fixya.

Your printer is saying that you should secure your wireless internet. Try resetting the router by holding the reset button located on the back for at least 30 seconds.

Security key/ passphrase

The easiest workaround for this is to connect your laptop to the D-Link
with an ethernet cable.

Make sure your laptop IP address is configured for the same subnet
Open your browser and go to

Default username: user
Default password: (blank)

(This is of course assuming that you did not change your
default username/password)

Once you're in, change the passphrase to anything you want.

Having trouble adding computer to wireless network

this is just easy.. what you should type is the encryption key only... if your security is wep, only the encryption key or key 1 is needed. if your security is wpa, only the passphrase is needed.. it is very CASE SENSITIVE.. but if you see that the name has changed to LINKYS_SES, then you have a problem there because your wireless settings has changed due to the button on your router which is the secure easy set-up on the upper left corner which is the cisco button.

Wpa encryption for wireless router snb5600

That's not a lot of info to go on, but let's try: first, you've got to set the router up for the WPA encryption and put the passphrase in there. You have to do that set-up while you're connected by wire to the router otherwise you'd lose the wifi connection half way through the process. Once the router is set up, do the matching thing on your computer, switch on wifi, and disconnect the cable from your computer to the router. Get back if that's what you'd already done and let us know what stages worked and at what point it fails.
