Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

2 Answers

When I attempt to install Windows XP Professional (32bit) on my Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook, the installation hangs before installing any SET UP files on the hard drive. What may be causing this issue?

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am not sure what you mean by "select other drive for OS installing" -- perhaps you are suggesting that I create a separate partition to install the OS? In any event, I "nuked" the hard drive (using Darik's Boot And Nuke) application and I am, at the time of this writing, running a Level 5 diagnostic of the hard drive, using SpinRite 6.0. So far (at 60% completed) there are no errors e.g. corrupt sectors being reported.

Interestingly, I am able to successfully install both Windows Vista and Windows 7 (the Acer Aspire 5100 is a "Vista Ready" Notebook) and though there are driver issues upon installing Windows 7, the fact remains, that this OS will install. I want to install Windows XP Pro, as it is this OS, that will run the most efficiently on this Notebook. With this said, perhaps you have another suggestion/s? I am very grateful for your assistance with this issue :)

"pipecleaner" ... your suggestion is smart, viable and indeed could be an obstacle to installing software (in this case (Windows XP Pro). However, the DVD disc that I am using is brand new. That said, in my own continued research into this issue, I have learned that while the Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook, uses (physically) an IDE hard drive, it is 'managed' by a SATA controller and therefore SATA drivers, which Windows XP does not (on it's own ) support. So my next (I think plausible) approach is to streamline a Windows XP installation disc that integrates SATA drivers (during installation). Does this 'ring true', make sense to anyone out there? As I have stated previously, I sincerely appreciate the suggestions/recommendations of others. Thank you :)

Excellent! Perhaps between both of us thinking, we may fix this damn issue, LOL. I appreciate your time. It is possible that I stated the "physical IDE hard drive being 'managed' by a SATA controller" incorrectly, BUT this is what I have read on a few tech forums, so I'm not discounting it, just yet :)

Looks like 97% of viewers of this issue didn't have a potential solution. I may not be explaining the issue properly. I do KNOW it IS a problem out there with the Acer Aspre 5100 - as I have read it repeatedly on many tech forums. I haven't worked on it lately, but when I come up with the solution - I'll post it here :)

Hi,
On the outside chance, The XP-Pro installation disk itself may be dirty or scratched. Had it happen to me.

    Howdy,
As I read your comments on the physical IDE hard drive being "managed" by a SATA controller I got a bit lost. My bad. I will learn about that at a later time. I do know it is possible to down grade a Vista OS back to XP. Microsoft I believe offered that as an early fix for Vista issues. I took that to mean ,running XP on a Vista platform. Ever hear of that??? No you got me thinking.

I suggest your select other drive for OS installing.
Exam: If you select particion C: for booting then change it and try to to use other empty/ enough space partucion.
Becouse i guess your particion C : is corrupted or infested by virus.
If you get success then when your start your pc 1st step is format your C drive.

Thanks & waiting for your feedback

I have replaced Vista with Windows Xp Professional in an Acer Aspire 5100. Everything went fine except that I can't install the chipset driver for video and the smbus driver. I have downloaded the drivers...

Vista has a known limitation of 50 characters for a path/filename in its 4th iteration. Place the installation files on the root of your hard drive (ie: c:\install), not your desktop or my documents... (if you need help with copy/paste and/or directory creation, please ask)
I am assuming you did not re-format the hard drive when installing XP.

I will research this further, let me know if starting with a smaller path helps...

In windows 7 after installing driver from my usb modem windows is aking for driver n sayd driver not installed

Here is how to Install them so they work. Download your XP/Vista driver you wish to install. If it's in a zip/rar file then extract it to your desktop.
You should have a simple
.exe file sitting on your desktop to install the drivers, as normal for XP.
Right click the .exe file and select "Properties".
Then select the tab called "Compatibility"
Now check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
Make sure "Windows XP Service Pack 2" is highlighted.
Now apply the settings and run the installer.
This should work for most drivers, but not all
SOME DRIVERS MAY CAUSE THE OPERATING SYSTEM TO BECOME UNSTABLE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU MAKE A SYSTEM RESTORE BEFORE EACH ATTEMPT OF INSTALLING A DRIVER.

Cant set a new windows xp

OK this may work for you.... At the point in the installation where you are asked to push F6, Push F5 instead. I had this same problem with my 12 unsuccessful attempts at an XP install. It has something to do with the ACPI driver. not only did the disc stop spinning, but the computer would restart. I tried pushing F5 and selected standard PC and it worked. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299340/
