I have a Verbatim 320 GB 2.5" USB portable Hard drive. I have a strange problem with it. When I plug in the USB cord to my laptop (runniing Windows XP SP1), the blue light starts blinking and the hard drivr is not detected. Sometimes it works (steady blue light and disk is recognised) after I replug the USB cord 10/20 times. Please let me know if there is any solution for this problem

Hmm try to install a 2.0 driver into the laptop..to work at it best and to be seen this drive works on a 2.0 usb port ..it may be seen at one point in a 1.0 slot ..but it s just a gamble...so install a 2.0 usb driver ...and after that locate the usb port that sees it every time from first plug...
there is a posibility that you already have this driver installed..so ..just try to change ports until you hit one that sees it every time ...if you have only 2 of them you do not have much choices but one of them should be the one..
another thing to do ..is to just add it and run the add new hardware wizard from the control panel...choose already added..and it will show the devices...highlight it from the list and proceed to install ..it will be easier to see it in the future .. But remember the main reason its the sp1..and the luck of the 2.0 driver ..
just google for a 2.0 usb driver for sp1...and there are available downloads on the net ..this is not a rare driver ..its common for all usb 2.0ports..just get one that fits the operatio system you use..
Anoter suggestion is to get to windows Xp sp2..and let it update to sp3..you will get rid of all security and devise recognition problems..

I have a 320 gb acclaim portable hard drive. My mac doesn't read it, the first time I plugged it the lap asked me if I wished to format it and I said yes. Now it doesn't read it, what can I

You formatted the hard drive on your laptop in NTFS and the MAC cannot read and write to this formatted NTFS hard drive.
THE FIX
Format the hard drive using your laptop BUT this time format it in FAT32.
The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard disk, so now you can exchange data between the MAC and the Windows laptop.

My Verbatim 47639 320 GB portable hard drive is now telling me that it is a 1.99 GB drive and all the data that was on the drive isnt there any more ? There is no partition on the drive and the drive is...

You may want to try to format it from windows management of the discs in NTFS filesystem.
This is because the FAT32 filesystem recognize only a part of the total capacity of your hard disk

I have a Verbatim ac320gb USB Hard Drive. i try to format it in windows and had it say exceeded the hub power and how i have 0 bits on it. i try to reformat it and say 289 gb but windows can not format it....

Each USB port passes a limited amount of wattage.
The "formatting" is a "high-wattage" operation.
Try connecting to a different desktop computer, hopefully with more wattage per USB port.

Note that 289 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 is equal to 320 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000

So, '289' (base-2) is equal to '320' (base-10).

I've plugged a portable harddrive in and it's not being recognized. It's a Verbatim USB 320. I am on a Toshiba with Windows 7

The USB memory key want to use a drive letter already in use. To fix it ,click on start, right click on My Computer then click on Manage. You may need to enter your password or click on Continue in the User Account window. Click on Disk Management and look for an entry that does not have a drive letter. Right click on the drive and then click on Change Drive Letter and Paths. Click on the Change button and select a new drive letter from the dropdown menu.Click OK in both windows to save.

Verbatim portable hard drive not recognized by XP - works in 2000

Restart XP and connect e/hd and it should pick it up. Some systems are plain lazy after a while, so manually install it.
