Question about Dell Dimension 5100 (D51L1) PC Desktop

Will not boot up

Hi
My Dell dimension will not boot up.  As soon as I turn it on it goes directly to 3 and 4 bypassing 1 and 2.  I'm not technically minded so can anyone suggest what might be wrong.  I just have a blank screen on the monitor.  It did start once and I immediately got a message requesting me to restart to finish installing updates.  I checked for software updates and the computer just shut down never to restart again.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Hi rey jr

Thanks for your solution but I can't even get to the stage of reinstalling software because although the cd tray opens I am unable to boot from the cd.  I note that the fan does not appear to be working and wonder if this is part of the problem.  I have a completely blank monitor screen with no prompts and the F keys don't work :-(((

Hi there, check the cmost setup for hard drive detection. if detected you may have a software prob., try to re-install your operating system, i.e. windows, hope you can save your documents files before you can install new operating system. ty

My Dell deskop when turned on only goes to the Dell slash screen then the screen goes black. Will not go to the windows screen.

Try these options:

1. Reseat your hard drive - unplug the ide cable from the motherboard and plug it again
2. Reseat the memory - remove and put it back again
3. Try to go to safe mode - while starting, press the F8 key to see the options
4. On the otherhand, you can select boot from the cd and use your Dell Diagnostic Utility and run hardware tests and see whats wrong..

Dell dimension 5510 it will not turn on, no

1/10th a volt? Nope.

Bypass the Power On switch. See if you have a bad switch first.

Then test the power supply. If the power supply comes on by bypassing the Power On switch, I'll bet you have a weak 12 volt voltage power rail.

1) Yellow wires are 12 Volts
2) Red wires are 5 Volts
3) Orange wires are 3.3 Volts
4) ANY Black wire is a Ground wire

They do sell power supply voltage testers, should you not wish to use a multimeter set at DC volts.
(0 - 50 Volt scale)

I prefer a multimeter.

A) ALL the light use less than 1 Watt
B) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts

C) A typical Processor uses 55 to 125 WATTS.

You have to turn the power supply on, by jumping the Soft Power On wire to any ground wire.

This is also the way to bypass the Power On switch, to see if the switch is bad.

Do you wish to proceed?

XP Keeps rebooting with LAN Cable connected

Have you tried going into the bios setup before windows loads up? You may have a setting to choose startup on lan. Just turn that off and hit F10 and enter.
To enter the bios setup keep pressing delete after truning on the computer until the bios screen appears. Don`t change anything unless you know what you are doing.

Bleep on start up with black screen

1-3-2 is indeed a Memory error.

The Diag LEDs on the front panel should be 34 too

Try each RAM module individually, and insure that when you seat the ram, you do the following:

  1. Unplug power then press and hold power cord for 10 seconds to bleed stored power in MB.
  2. Remove ram using levers on slots,
  3. When installing ram, ensure the levers are back, press firmly with both thumbs to seat RAM until levers snap up and lock, do not pull the levers into locked position
  4. restart system.
If problem goes away with one RAM module, replace that RAM, if problem exists will all RAM in all slots, then replace Motherboard
