What causes the vertical lines to appear on the top of my screen. I have a 19" orion.(tv1929) The picture jumps at first, but will settle after a few minutes. The lines never go away.

There are parts called capacitors in the set's vertical output circuit that need to be replaced. The vertical output integrated circuit may also need replacement as well, since the bad caps can cause it to work overly hard. This is a pretty common problem, but I can't tell you specific part locations or values because I don't have a circuit diagram for this model. You might see if a service shop in your area (if there are any left!) can give an estimate for the repair. Or, given the low replacement cost for small TV sets, you might just use this as an excuse to buy a new small flat-screen model.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but maybe this will point you in the right direction. Thanks for using Fixya!

I had a narrow white line appearing at the top of the screen for some time, then just recently the set lost all vertical scan and left a white line at the centre of the screen. What should I look for and...

There should be any loose solder terminals at the vertical sweep output section circuit. Check all the solder terminals. Re-solder all the suspected solder terminals.

Toshiba Color TV CF30D50 picture stretched vertically off-screen both at top & bottom - can find no adjustment knob - ??

The vertical sweep output section of your tV has the fault. Replace all the electrolytic capacitors [5 or 6 of them there] at one time. Height to the picture is more than normal is the fault now.

I have white lines on the top of my tv. It is Orion, maybe 3 years old.

This is an easy repair if you've ever soldered and would not be too costly for a repair shop to do it for you. The problem is a bad Vertical Output IC (usually mounted on an aluminum heat sink with the part on it labeled LA78?? ) and 1 or 2 bad capacitors. Some times you can even fix the problem by re-soldering the contacts of the IC- To find the IC follow the 4 wires that come from the Yoke (which is a contained coil of wires slipped over the neck of the picture tube(s)) back to the board. 2 of the wires go to the horizontal o/p and 2 to the Vertical o/p the thinner gauge wires are for the vertical.

How do you fix a white horizontal line across top of Orion TV?

Hello eatkinson,

This denotes a problem with the vertical deflection circuit. This is more then likely the result of the vertical coupling capacitor failing. You will need the schematic diagram of the TV to find the capacitor in question. it is located between the vertical output stage and the vertical deflection winding of the yoke transformer. In addition check the continuity of the vertical winding of the yoke transformer this can cause the same problem. In any event the problem is that the vertical deflection signal is not getting to the yoke transformer or the yoke transformer is malfunctioning.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Screen Smaller on Orion1934" TV

Hello Falken94,

Your TV is losing what is called vertical deflection. This might be caused by the vertical coupling capacitor going bad, or by the vertical deflection coil on the yoke transformer going bad. In any case there is not enough vertical deflection signal getting for the vertical output section of your TV to the vertical coils on the yoke transformer. I would suggest that you get this looked at by a qualified TV technician, due to the nature of this problem.

I hope this helps,
Thank you,

Hello mel2003,

This problem is caused by the loss of vertical deflection. Either the vertical output section of your TV or the vertical coupling capacitor has completely failed. In any event you will have to have a TV technician fix this set, BTW I hope you have not been playing the TV with the line on the screen this will burn the TV screen.

I hope this helps

If you're looking to just release the v-chip try this:

Turn set on and set the volume to minimum.
Hold the volume (-) on the set and press 0 (zero) on the remote.
V-Chip password should release.

Picture problem

Usually that symptom is caused by cracked solder joints on the vertical output IC. As the IC starts heating up, the picture starts breaking up at the top with several "dancing" dark lines appearing, the top scrunches down and then when the vertical quits altogether, the screen goes completely black. A good slap on the side of the TV might make it happen faster or clear it up temporarily. If you have experience working on PC boards then you can resolder the pins of the vertical output IC but if you have never soldered parts on PC boards then allow a qualified tech to handle it for you.
