Your memory is dump or dirt, please clean up your memory and try to put it again. Please clean it with an eraser. If the problem still exist please try to connect properly the hard disk.

blinking cursor problem is the error messages to your hard disk. do troubleshooting on your hard disk by replacing the hard disk (100% fully functional) and then do the system installation
(you will get results cheer)

My computer starts to go through the boot process but then it stops all I get is a blinking cursor. In addition if try to hit f8 to restore theast known setting it still ends up on the blinking cursor

The blinking sensor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that it can't locate the Windows boot files - either the disk is defective or Windows is totally corrupted.
Reinstall and if the problem returns very quickly you will have to replace the hard disk.

PC won't boot up just get blinking cursor in the upper left corner of screen

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that Windows is missing - its most critical, core files have been corrupted beyond repair. The only thing you can do is to reinstall using the recovery cd.

Installed ubuntu 9.10 now can't boot XP. Black

Now that you have installed ubuntu which is linux did you make your pc able to do dual boot. It is possible you have overwriten some important files like master boot record while doing ubuntu installation. Most times blinking cursor means no hard drive or operating system. you can try poping in XP cd and try to do recovery if you have it. Also easiest would be if you could boot into safe mode and try to fix the issue by replacing missing or corrupt files.

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that the OS is missing Since you get it even when trying to boot from the cd it means that the southbridge is defective. Replacing the motherboard will cost you as much as a new one so it's dead, buy another one.

Computer displays black screen with blinking cursor

Its seems its not booting correctly. Just Insert Windows CD and fix the windows. Another solution is to press (I think) F1 or F11 or F12 (depending on the model) when booting the machine. It will take you to recovery mode. Use it to restore the boot section ONLY.
