Starrett 721 6 inch Caliper

I have a Starrett 721 6'' vernier caliper. After power up and ''zero'' the digital readout ''flutters'' between 0.0000'' and +/- 0.0025'' Any ideas what is going on?

You might have some crud between the coded strip and the reader behind the display, or a chip trapped some where. try cleaning all the parts you can get to it with an alcohol prep pad. As a last resort Starrett will refurbish it for you. it isn't that cheap but it will be less than a new one. give them a call.

Starrett will refurbish it for you is no longer done. I have made that call and they do not do that when it is out of production, that is from them.

forgot to add, I own one that does the same thing.

How do you set a 722 starrett digital caliper to zero.

Just ran into the same problem. Bought a caliper at a garage sale and it needed new batteries. When i put them in it was reading .006. I held the M button down for 2 seconds and it reset to .000

Readout is flashing a series of dash marks, and will not stop. I just put in a new battery

Hold the origin button for greater than 1 second. You may need to use a point tool to push the button all the way down.

I zero my caliper and go out an inch and then close and it is rea

The dial and needle are not aligned properly. I have several calipers (all vernier) which were past down to me from my father. Some are almost 75 years old and still measure +/- 1000th! I'd go out and get a good old fashioned caliper.

I just aquired a Starrett 721 digital caliper that wouldn't turn on. Took cover off and batteries were in reversed polarity. New batteries didn't help. Is the display fried?

More than likely. But to make sure: check that new battery is good (voltmeter). Check with ohmmeter across the battery contacts - should read few hundred ohms to few kiloohms. If OK, reinseret battery. Push ON button. Push reset button. If go, congrats. If not, get another caliper.

Starret 734 Caliper will not power up

OK, I fixed it! After hearing back from Starrett, it seems that a RENATA battery is the only one that fits right. I went out to Radio Shack and checked their stock, which turns out to be manufactured by RENATA. The new battey works fine... It did take a try or two to get the display cleared, then Error04, now it's working again.

Good luck!
