I have a dell inspiron 531s and the graphics card went out. I bought an external graphics card but it says I have to uninstall the onboard one before installing. How can I do that if I can't log on or get past the blue dell screen?

Absolutely, good call!

IF the Inspiron 531s came with a video card as is an option, replace it.
IF it did not, and is using the motherboard Integrated Graphics, install a graphics card.

{There are those who think that Integrated Graphics is a graphics card, and not a GPU soldered directly to the motherboard. I'm going to do this, or that with my graphics card, when in reality there is No graphics card.

GPU is Graphics Processing Unit. The graphics 'engine', if you will.
It is a Chipset,

A GPU can be soldered directly to the motherboard, (Integrated Graphics), or soldered to a removable adapter card. (Graphics/Video Card),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_Processing_Unit

Chip and Chipset are slang terms to denote I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_circuit

The Dell Inspiron 531s Desktop PC has a PCI-Express x16 expansion slot, on the motherboard,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd531/en/OM/appendix.htm#wp1149549

(Under the heading - Specifications. Scroll down to the subheading Expansion Bus, and look to the right of the second PCI Express heading.
PCI Express - connector - 1 x16)

You can use a PCI-Express graphics card.

To go a little deeper;
The PCI Express technology has changed since it's inception. (2004)
Went basically from version 1.0, to 1.1, to 2.0, and now 2.1

In 2007 (January 15) the PCI Express 2.0 version was brought out.
(As far as I know PCI Express 3.0 isn't out yet. Supposed to come out in late 2011, but it's delayed)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

Since the Dell Inspiron 531s came out in 2008, (According to my sources) it should be using the PCI Express 2.0 technology.

Both, graphics cards that are built upon the PCI Express 2.0 technology, AND the PCI Express 2.1 technology, will work on your computer.

The main thing you need to be concerned with is the power requirement.

Does your Power Supply have enough Watts to run the graphics/video card you're looking at?

Does the 12 Volt power rail of the Power Supply, have enough Amp's (Amperage), to run the graphics card you're looking at?

The Dell Inspiron 531s Desktop PC comes with a 300 Watt power supply.
Do not know what the 12 Volt power rail amperage is.

You also have to be concerned if the graphics card you are looking at, will FIT in the computer case.
The case measures 6.7 inches across, from the OUTSIDE edges.
(6 and 3/4 inches approximately, or 17 cm)

A good seller will state the physical dimensions of the graphics card. Look at the Height.
Computer unplugged from power, computer on a table, computer case open.

OBSERVE Anti-Static Precautions.
Measure the distance from the top edge of the PCI Express x16 slot, to the inside edge of the computer case.
This is the distance in Height that the graphics card will have to fit in.

(The graphics card will go down into the PCI Express x16 slot, a little. Approximately 1/2 inch.
Do Not include this. It will allow 1/2 inch of clearance from the top of the graphics card, to the inside edge of the computer case. You do not want the graphics card to touch the computer case )

Anti-Static Precautions:
Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

Computer on a table, computer unplugged from power, computer case open;
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

{If you use a metal tape measure, touch it to the metal frame BEFORE using. Same thing with a wooden ruler that has a metal edge. Touch the metal edge to the metal frame of the open computer}

If you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

Recommendation for a graphics (Video) card?

I go with the 'Best Bang for the Buck' theory,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130680

I'm also watching the power requirement. {300 Watt power supply}

{It's 5.7 inches long (5 and 3/4 inches approx.), and 4.38 inches Tall. (Height. 4 and 3/8ths inches approx.}

Note that the video (Graphics) card has two DVI ports, and an HDMI port.
If your monitor has a VGA cable, you'll need to buy an adapter.
Female VGA (HD-15) to male DVI adapter.

{Monitor cable has a male (pins) VGA connector. Video card has a Female (Socket holes) DVI connector (Port)
Adapter VGA end is Female. DVI end is Male}

Example of female VGA (HD-15) to male DVI adapter,

My dell inspiron 531s will not read the video card.it only reads the integrated. the integerated and the nvidia geforce card both came with the pc new. I can not get any signal from the card at...

Dell Support>Inspiron 531s>Windows Vista 32bit O/S>Driver Downloads>Video>Nvidia GeForce 8300GS (128MB's of graphics ram, fits in a PCI-E x16 slot, has a DVI, and VGA port),

Assuming I understand you correctly, and you are able to use the Integrated Graphics;

1) Download the driver, and install it. If you are asked, if you wish to restart your computer - NO.

2) Close all windows, shut your computer down normally.

3) Unplug from power. Connect the monitor to the graphics card now, instead of the Integrated Graphics.

Press the Power On button in, and hold it in for a count of 5 seconds. (Count 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005. Has to be at least 5 seconds)

Let go of the Power On button.
Do this procedure two more times.

You are clearing CMOS Error Codes, and resetting the BIOS back to the factory default settings.

4) Plug back into power. WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.

Display is blank after turn on

Try hook up an external monitor and see if you get any video. If that doesn't work then the problme is the onboard graphic card(GPU). You can try the reflow method from www.msbin.com

Memory card slot

The Dell Inspiron 531s does not come with a memory card reader slot.

This is Dell's specifications on the Inspiron 531s,

http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/desktops/inspndt_53xs/pd.aspx?refid=inspndt_53xs&s=dfh&cs=22

Left-click on the Tech Specs tab.

You could use a memory card reader that attaches to any of the computers USB ports.
Here is an example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1187796&CatId=942

Scrolling down the page, shows you an animated gif of this memory card reader.

New Graphics Card

Not too much is a relative term, so I'll leave that up to you. When I want to upgrade parts and pieces, I always check a number of sites to compare prices and reviews. Some of my favorites (and others will have their own favorites) are Tiger Direct, NewEgg, MicroCenter, Geeks.com to name a few. The difference in prices may be just a buck or two on some items, but you'll stumble across really great deals from time to time.

When you install a new video card you must disable the onboard video card by going into the bios setup. Below I have listed the requirements of Second life game. e 531 does come with PCI-E slots so make sure you buy a VIDEO card with PCI-E Walmart sells some pretty decent priced Graphics cards. pretty much any pci-e card you buy new in walmart these days will be fine for this game.

PC Minimum System Recommendations:

* Internet Connection*: Cable or DSL

* Computer Processor: 1.6GHz Pentium 4 or Athlon 2000+ or better

* Computer Memory: 512MB or better

* Video/Graphics Card**:

Dell Inspiron 8200 ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 Green Screen Problem

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop. After your computer is attached to an external monitor, press the <Fn> key and the <F8> (CRT, LCD) key to switch the video image to the display. If the external monitor works, the computer display or video controller may be defective.
