my question asking for the brand of engine makes a difference, as it tells me how the carburetor is set up. Briggs and stratton used a rubber diaphragm that uses engine vacuum to make it work like a fuel pump. Often times this diaphragm retracts, loses its seal, and makes the engine run bad. They also like to get water under it, making the engine run bad. These are the ones where the carburetor is on top of the gas tank. Taking one of these apart almost ALWAYS requires replacing the diaphragm.

The Tecumseh engines have a float type of carb, and their most common issue is the tiny hole that goes through the nut that holds the carb bowl on gets plugged, and it will act like it's starving for gas. It's almost always overlooked, but it's where all the fuel passes that the engine uses. There are a couple of other issues that can happen; I've seen the carb bowl get crushed because it got water in it, which froze, and crushed the float, and also the needle valve that lets the fuel into the carburetor can get stuck, or will leak, etc. Sometimes a simple adjustment of the float can make a big difference, as the increased or decreased fuel pressure increases or decreases the amount of fuel that goes through that metering hole that I described earlier. Sometimes as well, the float will get stuck so that the valve is open, and it will dump fuel into the engine crankcase, and that will make it run terribly. Everything makes a difference in this.

Starving for gas problems are sometimes a bad gasket where the carb bolts onto the engine, it leaks air. Maybe your bolts are loose. If they changed then carb, they might have reused the same gasket or not have tightened the bolts enough.

I can get my lawn mower to start but it will not stay running

Drain all the gas out of your fuel tank via fuel line to carburetor. Then remove the bowl under your carburetor, place container under carb first. You will see that you have water in your gas. Just a little would keep your mower from starting and running. GOOD LUCK FRIEND.

Mower will start but won't keep running, it will start right away but it will shut down again. it has very little gas on the gas filters the gas filter is new but it looks empty... can this be a fuel pump...

Yes it could be. I would disconnect fuel line from carb, put this end of fuel line over a bucket, then turn starter over to check fuel flow. This should tell you quickly if your pump is working or not. Good luck!

Toro str will not start, motor spins but will not fire

Ensure clean fuel. Always use Stabile in fuel. Follow fuel line from fuel tan to carb, ensure no leaks. Remove carb fuel bowl to check float operation. Have pliers to crimp line or use fuel shut off valve. Remove carb float bowl and clean. Float should hang down freely gas should flow. Push float up gas should cut off. Replace spark plug, ensure plug wire snaps on tight. Clean or replace air filter. Ensure oil is full, 30w oil. All mowers have low oil shutoff.

Mower starts and immediately shuts off and wont start again if i let it sit for five minutes it does the same thing checked oil and air filter carb is clean attempting to find correct socket to remove plug

Pull the fuel line from the carb & see if it is running steady, If so the next check is the carb bowl to see if maybe the float needle is partly plugged, and then it could be the valve lash clearance which will require more mechanical knowledge.

Huskee 16 hp Tecumseh starts and runs great but

When it shuts down check it for spark. You sound like you may have a weak coil. OR

You might have water in your fuel and it only runs until it hits the water level in the carb. You can try draining your carb *(do this when mower is cold...never drain gas from a hot mower!) and see if the mower runs longer. While you are draining your fuel you can check the float level too. A float that closes too early or that is partially obstructed might only let in enough fuel to run for short periods. Then, your three minutes of sitting is just to let the carb bowl refill. When you remove the carb bowl let the float hang down and note the fuel flow. Is it fast? Or is it just a slow drip? If it seems slow you should work the float up and down a few times to see if the flow improves. If it does improve consider draining all the fuel out and cleaning the gas tank.

Good luck and be careful!

Mower starts fine but conks out in about a minute or two.I changed the air filter but it still stalls a minute after starting. toro mower is about 2 years old

Recheck your fuel selector to make sure it is ON. Also if this is the first start of the season there may be old gas / debris in the bottom of the float bowl. One other area to check is the bottom of the gas tank / fuel outlet port of the tank. I don't remember if this model had an in-line fuel filter but also something to check if installed.

This is listed under Toro Mower with power tools that has a 6.5 Briggs and Stratton engine.

To clean the carb passages you will need to do the following.

(FUEL SELECTOR OFF)

1. The adjustment screw on the side of the carb that has a spring on it. You need to count the number of turns it takes turning it clockwise until it just comes up snug NOT TIGHT. Then remove it.

2, Remove the float bowl and dump the contents.

3. Spray carb cleaner in the adjustment screw hole.

4. Disconnect the fuel hose to the carb and spray carb cleaner in the brass tubing hole. The cleaner should be exiting via the float needle. Make sure float assy is down....

5. Connect the fuel line. (use a spray paint can lid and catch the fuel in this step. FUEL SELECTOR on. Catch fuel exiting carb. Lift the float to a LEVEL position and feul flow should stop. DO NOT FORCE IT! Gentle lift only.

FUEL Selector off.

6. Install float bowl

7. Re-install adjustment screw/needle/spring in the side of the carb. Turn it until it just snugs up.. then back it off the number of turns it took to initially close it before removal.

FUEL Selector on... wait 30 seconds..

7. Start mower.

That should do it.

Fuel will not go to carb.take fuel line off and crank it over the fuel pours out of the line, the only way it starts is if you pour gas into it directly

carb float valve stuck not letting fuel into carb body sometimes a light tap on carb may free it up or may have to be removed and cleaned and or float may need to be repaired or replaced

Poulan 6.75 Lawn mower will not start

Remove spark plug, clean and dry. Replace plug. Remove air filter. Spray WD-40 into carb opening; one second blast. Turn over engine, (pull handle). Engine should start briefly and run for 3 seconds.  If not, you are not getting spark to spark plug. If engine starts, you have a dirty carb and you can buy a rebuild kit from manufacture.
