If you have never done this before please seek a repair center. you could do more damage if your not familiar with this kind of work.

Doesn't power on. Could it be a bad power supply? If so, does it pay to replace it?

you could probably find a power supply board.
Andrews electronics or other places will probably sell you a new or rebuilt module.
But there could be other problems in this chassis.

When a set won't power on it could be power supply or something in the high voltage section like the high voltage transformer.

TV will not turn on. Clicking noise heard from inside.

These sets use what is called a "switch mode" power supply. In order for them to work there is a capacitor that "kick" starts the process. If that cap goes bad, the power supply will not start up. Also, there are other caps inside that maintain the oscillation required for the power supply to work. There are 2 options for you here.

1) Replace the entire power supply module.
2) Repair the existing one.

Sicne these types of power supplies are not the easies to diagnose or repair, I would suggest that you replace the power supply module. That should resolve the problem.

Please note that there are other causes of the reported problem, but hte power module becoming defective is the most common.

RCA P61960 projection screen. no picture, no sound. tries but shuts off.

It will depend on the Chassis number you have but it sounds like a bad Deflection module or a bad Convergence power supply module. The Convergence Power supply module is on the left looking from the back mounted above the deflection module. On newer models the picture tubes can short and put these sets into shut down mode ( Three Trys). Start by unplugging the CRT modules off the neck of the tubes one at a time. If it doesn't come on you have eliminated the tubes. There will be a Red and Black set of wires from the deflection module to the convergence power supply module. Unplug it. If it fires up then it's the convergence power supply module. If not it will probably be the deflection module. The flayback transformer is a common problem along with several bad caps towards the front of the board. Let me know if this fixes it.

Power module

yes there should be a samll board that has the supply module on it it's the one with the direct link to the chord this board has a solid state module. if it doesn't on this model it should be the one on the main board that is directly linked to the small board.

Bad power supply q301,q302 shorted

I'm going to guess that you have a Sony set based upon the circuit designations that you listed. If that is so, you really don't need the entire module. You will need to replace the transistors and a resistor. Possibly a cap or two will be required as well. Please post the model number and further details shall be provided.

Thanks,
Dan

Faulty power supply unit?

You can contact the manufacture to purchase the power supply module.

However, there are other boards in the set that can easily cause the power supply failure because something went defective. It is also possible that the power supply is not defective, but it is in protect mode because of a failure on another board, or in some other device in the set.

The tech would follow procedure from the service manual using the proper instrumentation and diagnostics to determine the defective board(s). Then he would replace the necessary modules and or parts to get the set working again.

In the end if you try fixing this yourself, you can end up spending a few hundred dollars on a power supply and only find that it blows again or goes in to protect mode because the original fault was not determined and corrected.
