VCR side doesn't show video

DVD works fine, VCR does not. It only plays back the audio and will not show the video. Any idea why?

    It's a brand new unit!

  • jimcucci Feb 18, 2008

This is a new unit, out of the box. The unit does not respond to the remote control when in VCR mode, other than to switch to DVD mode.

It looks like the video heads need cleaning. You need to buy a VHS cleaning kit. If that does not work, you may have to do it manually. Be very careful if you do this yourself, as the improper procedure or to much pressure on the video head can damage it.
Here is some good info on the subject:

Hiya!

I'm noticing a lot of these combo players use an s-video connector for the DVD, but the VCR output can only use Composite video. Check the back of your player and make sure that the video-out from the vcr side is connected correctly. The cables from the vcr side should look like this (yellow is the video):

Good luck!

A little more detail on this issue:

Please take a look at the attached photo (ignore the little black box at the bottom).

This may not be exactly what yours looks like, but I'll be it's similar enough. Note that the S-Video out is only for the DVD side, but the white/red composite audio connections work for both. This will explain why you get audio with your vcr but not video, if that yellow composite video cable isn't connected up from the vcr side. It's no surprise at all that folks are having issues with this, it's a really silly way for them to design the hook-ups.

Hi,

There is the possibility that your TV is on video mute. This happens when some TV senses that there is no intelligent video signal coming in to its input.

Reasons for this maybe due to:
1. dirty video heads of the VCR;
2. defective video cable from the VCR to the TV's Video INput (normally a yellow RCA);
3. internal fault of the source selection of the TV.

Of the above, chances are that it is a case of dirty video heads which then can be corrected by a tapehead cleaner.

If your concern has not been corrected after completion of the above procedures, you may need to check the RCA cables from the VCR to the TV or seek the services of a professional.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

My initial response was based on your first posting "DVD..fine, VCR ..plays..audio..not..video."

Your latest post "unit..not respond..remote control when..VCR ..other..switch to DVD mode" is an entirely different concern.

With respect to no response to remote commands when in VCR mode, pls try to reset the unit, that is unplug from the mains for a couple of hours. In some instances some versions would not switch to VCR (or any of its function) if there is no tape loaded correctly inside.

Should you need a copy of the owners manual, it may be downloaded here.

Incidentally, there have been numerous issues with this particular model being manufactured in China by Funai Electric Company Ltd. If all else fails, perhaps it would be to your advantage to return the unit for a replacement.

    Good luck again.

I received a JVC DR-MV80B DVD/VCR combo and the DVD's play fine, but on the VCR side, the video doesn't play - only hear audio. Is this a product issue, or something that can be repaired without costing...

Try cleaning the video heads - assuming you got a 'snow' image with audio, see if it helps. Otherwise the VCR might require a head replacement/mechanical realignment, which could be expensive/uneconomical.

I had the same problem, so I took it back to basics. Hooked cable into VCR/DVD player and another cable from player to TV. S cable too, plus red/white audio. Plays DVDs on AV1 and VHS on Channel 3 on TV setting.

Audio Problems playing VHS tapes with Denon AVR 1910

Did it EVER work as expected with VCR audio through the HDMI or are we working through that right now assuming it can?

I don't have a detailed manual, but the rear panel clearly shows some analog-only outputs (and NO digital ones) for the section called DVD/VCR. Internally, I'm sure there are proper analog-digital-converters for recording VHS to the native DVD-R, but VHS VCR's are NOT inherently digital audio devices so I'm pretty sure you need to run an analog RCA pair for the VHS video.

VCR playback sound and pciture don't match

That is a tape path issue. The new VCR has the problem, usually the guide post for the tape sticks out when it shouldn't making the sound late for the picture because the gap between the video head and audio head is wrong.

Toshiba Model: SD-V295 DVD/VCR Combo Setup for TV recording

The proper hookup is antenna or cable into the VCR RF/antenna input, then VCR RF/antenna output to the TV RF input. The hookup you describe means no signal is getting to the VCR.

With some TVs, there can be Video and audio output jacks which can be hooked to the video and audio jacks of the VCR. However this would likely mean you could only record the channel being watched, and, the TV would have to be on.

Can't get my dvd/vcr to tape and play back

Color codes for A/V cables:

Yellow: Composite Video
Red: Right Audio Channel
White: Left Audio Channel (mono)

Does your TV have a video & audio OUTPUT on the back of the TV?

If so, will need another set of audio/video cables and you need to connect the yellow cable from the video OUTPUT of the TV to the video INPUT (yellow) of the DVD/VCR and connect the Red cable from the right OUTPUT of the TV to the red INPUT of the DVD/VCR. Then connect the white cable from the left OUTPUT of the TV to the white INPUT of the DVD/VCR. If your TV is not in stereo, just connect up the white cable for mono audio.

If your TV set does NOT have audio/video OUTPUTS, then you will still need another set of audio/video cables and connect the yellow cable from the video OUTPUT of the cable box to the yellow video INPUT of the DVD/VCR and connect either the red or white (or both if possible) to the red or white audio INPUTS of the DVD/VCR.

You need two sets of cables because you want to watch DVD's & tapes on your TV (Path #1) and you want to record the TV channel shows back to your DVD/VCR (Path #2).

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good Luck!

- Jim

Sounds really broken. Unless you can find a replacement DVD drive for low money , you may have to junk it.

On some of the DVD/VCR combo units, the VCR output is only available through the RF jack (channel 3), standard video1.gif (yellow) RCA jack and S-VIDEO jack. If you are using the Component jacks, the DVD side will work but the VCR will not. This is because the quality of video recorded on VHS tapes is so much lower than component quality video.
Thank you for rating this solution.

Dvd into vhs input

If you can watch TV normally then it should be a button on your VCR remote. It could be "Input", "Line" or "Aux". Tvs with more than one input line will may require 2 presses on that button, one for each line. This is the best answer that I can give not seeing your remote. Any questions?
