My Craftsman 6.25 HP lawnmower won't start. It has fuel, have checked and cleaned and gaped plug. It does not seem to be getting any spark. Unit is 2 years old, in good shape. Any idea what to do next or just take it to the shop??

Mine sometimes has no fire and I find it is usually the cable operated kill switch is too slack and not releasing the very poorly and cheaply designed kill switch.

Do you have spark? There are two things to look for when any engine won't start....fuel & spark, Take your plug out and lean it up against the metal of engine...turn it over and see if you see a good blueish spark.

No spark? Could be the plug, safety switch, coil

Next squirt a little gas into spark plug hole, replace the plug...will it fire up? If so...start working your way back down the fuel system....carburetor, fuel lines, fuel filter and gas (is gas old or new? is there any water in it?)

try that...www.nnyparts.com

I have a Craftsman self-propelled lawnmower that will not start.

first remove air filter and spray starting fluid in the carb? if it starts the fuel is the problem carbs are easily removed and cleaned make sure needel is not stuck? if it dosnt start chexk for spark pull rope hold screwdriver over wire touch it too plug end see if you see spark if not? then you must test zone conrol cable and grounds? did you hit something hard with the blade if so you could have a sheered flywheel key it will trow egine out of time ?

if you cleaned the carb thats great however if its a carb with a fuel bowl youll have to unscrew this and clean it to they have a habit of accumulating dirt and rust from moisture after cleaning bowl fuel should flow corectly without obstruction allowing smooth running operation also spark plugs are pre gapped for your mower model no need to adjust unless you bent it or are toing a custom projet such as go cart

The starter bendix is not engaging properly the bendix pushes the starter gear into the flywheel gear when the starter spools up, it may need minor lubrication.
It sounds like the engine is not getting fuel as it should, the main jet may be restricted from varnish if she stumbles under a load especially if the plug tips are white after running for 1/2 an hour.
Remove the float bowl and clean the jet, make sure the fuel is still good, gas that smells like a library is more like varnish and less like fuel.

Turns over but does not start new spark plug in riding craftman lawnmower

First, make sure you are sitting in the seat as the seat has a safety switch under it that will prevent it from starting if noone is on it.
Check for spark,If no spark,Coil is not working.
Check for fuel at carb,If no fuel, check filter and Carb may needs cleaning or replaced.

If you have spark and fuel and it still won't start,It is a timing issue.
