Hey Rick...I am trying to replace the cam stack gear in a bernina 730...I have taken out the gear and kept the cams in position with each other...but now I dont know the overall location of the cam stack relative to the rest of the machine...I fear the needle will be moving when its in the material....if you could help...that would be great...thanks..Ron

It does not matter where the position of the camstack is when you put it in, it should not affect any other part of the machine.

You only need to worry about the handwheel and the long shaft turning while the camstack is out. If the shaft the worm gear below the camstack were to turn at all while the camstack gear is out it will throw the needle pendulum swing off. Thus requiring adjustment tweeks of the worm gear after the new camstack is back in. Loosen screw(s) on worm gear, move slightly and check pendulum swing of needle on wide zigzag. If its not right keep tweeking the worm gear until it looks good. A peice of paper under the presserfoot will show tears if it is off.

This series are prone to cracking the cam gear. Search Bernina cam gear at www.ashleyandthenoisemakers.com and there is a full example with pictures on how to do it. Try ebay for the gear. Check prices.

Supply of new stitch cog for Bernina 830 Record

I don't know what a stitch cog is by your definition but I suspect that you may be referring to the cam stack worm gear, part # 310 007 03. These gears are available, however those produced and sold as after market parts online have ranged from bad to very bad. I would suggest that you find an OEM part (not a reproduction) that are still available from time to time on EBAY etc.
Changing the gear is not as straight forward as it may look. The proper replacement requires: 1. removal of the cam stack without damaging the machine parts, 2. removal and installation of the new gear with the correct alignment of the individual cams, 3. installation of the cam stack and pattern indicator without axial play, 4. correct parabola timing of the main-shaft worm wheel and cam stack gear, 5. synchronization of the zigzag and automatic cam parabolas, 6. pattern indicator timing, 7. checking and adjusting the automatic needle position. Bernina 730

try changing the needle--one for the fabric being sewed
also the zig zag could have a worn or damaged gear or cam
or there could be a timing problem.

When trying to change to the other sewing stitches the cams will not the the selector pass

doesn't sound like he tried real hard, my suggestion is to find a sewing machine shop that will take the machine apart & find out why the selector doesn't move, it's possibly a worn or loose or broken part, & the repair man is suppose to open the machine & find out what's wrong.

I need to purchase a replacement gear for a Bernina Record 730. Can you direct me to a source?

I'm not sure that the gears for that machine are still available... If they are, any bernina dealer should be able to order one for you or may have a parts machine you could take one from.

Viewer states problem - but cannot correct.

Hi, if you look in the bobbincase you will see a round spring. Sometimes this gets moved and it blocks the hole the sensor reads through. Clean inside the bobbincase with a q-tip. Also clean the sensor lens on the door with a q-tip. Also try rewinding a bobbin but don't start with the thread through a hole in the bobbin.
Hope this helps.

Bernina 730 locks up, had to turn it off & back on 3 times before it would do anything. I switched it from sewing to embroidery, totally locked. It's been to the shop twice recently.

Typically, ther are two problems with locked up Bernina 730's:
1. Look for a split in the worm gear on the cam stack...(white Delrin systhetic gear attached to the steel cams.
2. Look for a crack in the vertical shaft gear...(Delrin synthetic gear as well)
These gears have given great performance for over 40 years and may need to be replaced...

Replace Gear Stack Cam on Bernina 730

This is a very common problem with these machines. First of all you have to have a new camstack gear. Then you may need a tech to do it. The gears can be found for purchase on the internet with a search. If you feel you want to do it yourself contact me and I'll tell you how but its very involved and many things have to be done just right for it to work.
