What is confusing me is that the dvd works fine ... so shouldn't the vcr also????

  • Yve 57 Feb 18, 2008

On the back of the dvd/vcr are the composite cables and the s-video.

It sounds like you may have your vcr connected via composite cable. Check the back of your VCR and follow the cable to your TV. You should see a Red, White and Yellow connection on both ends. The Yellow connector is the video.

Here is an image to help you find it:

The composite cable ends look like the supplied image. If you can, take a look and the back of your VCR and describe everything that's connected to it here.

    Thanks!

Ok, the composite cables are your audio, which is working correctly. The s-video cable should look like this:

Is this cable connected to both your VCR and TV? If not, that will be your culprit.

I have a bit more clear picture of why your vcr video won't show up. If you notice in this image (ignore the black box at the bottom), the dvd side has an s-video out, but the vcr side can only use composite video. You will need to plug a cable from the composite-out (yellow) connector on the vcr to the composite-in connector on the tv. You will also likely need to change your TV input to make it work correctly. Sorry if there was any confusion, and I hope this helps you solve your problem!

Sorry, couldn't find a better illustration in a pinch :( If you're genuinely interested in that fix though, there's a thread that details it here:

Looks like it costs a bit over 20 bucks, so not too bad.

It's also a good thing to note that - if your vcr is as the picture shows - you can just hook up the composite cables and they'll work for both dvd and vcr. The s-video cable gives a better picture quality, but if your tv has s-video and composite video on different inputs, you will have to connect two sets of audio cables (1 to dvd, 1 to vcr) to make them work correctly and you'll have to switch your tv input every time you go from one to the other.

Take a look at the thread linked above for information on getting one of those boxes.
