I was typing along in Mocrsoft Word and suddenly, by fluke, all the apostrphes and question marks are showing up as french characters- e's and u's with accents. I can't figure out how to get rid of them. It's only happening in Word.

The green keys correspond to another language, but I cannot figure out what the language is. Some of the text on the keys is French, but I have tried several language settings (two for Canadian French, France, Belgium) and none fit.

Finally I figured it out. Hold the shift control function keys at the same time. This will turn the green key function on and off.

It turns only some keys into "green" mode on my laptop (Acer 5742-6406). Complete solution is to switch to a french keyboard layout (keyboard icon in the lower right corner)

Here is your solution, you have a bilingual keyboard language installed or two or more different languages installed and when you press left alt and left shift it cycles through them you can go into your keyboard settings and change the languages if you want this to stop happening or just press those keys a few times to get it back to normal....

PS: some french characters need you to press the right alt(or alt car) and the key... hope i helped now back to hacking wow actually how i figured this out... don't ask...

There is a little keyboard symbol on the right hand side of the taskbar. Click on it for language options. It's the fastest way to fix it, but to prevent accidentally switching the language option is probably inevitable, as there is a keyboard shortcut that is easily accidentally typed.

The solution is to press alt and than shift on the left side of the keyboard. This turns off the green keys and turns on the white keys.

The best solution so it shouldn't happen again ( unless you require the French#**# keys) is to go to go to start: type keyboard go to Dvorak keyboard & change other settings, keyboard & languages(at this point make a floating language bar that should show up on top right of screen.... Go to general set to en-can & find United States International ( they invented the typewriter ) move it to the top & delete the multi- canadian language , the French etc that way when you hit hot keys in error you go between canadian english & us int'l. Double check on your floating language bar

This is the second laptop I've owned where I've run into this problem. The first was an HP, this is an ACER. When I called HP tech support, no one there had any idea what I was talking about. I'm convinced they use typewriters.

Solution (fixes problem immediately and forever. Works on ACER {windows7}, might work for HP):
~Click on the keyboard icon on the taskbar (near the system tray, lower right hand corner of your screen).
~Select "Show the Language Bar"
~The language bar shows up in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
~Click the little down arrow/triangle (options)
~Click "Settings"
~Select the "Advanced Key Settings" tab.
~From the list, my problem was "Between Input Languages" had a "Key Sequence"
~**Use whatever key sequence shows up to undo whatever it was that happened**
~If this solved the problem, select the action and click "Change Key Sequence"
~Click the option for "Not Assigned"
~Click "OK"
~Click "Apply"
Hopefully you will never have this problem again. Having default keyboard shortcuts for features that 99.99% of users never use is idiotic. Having no one at tech support who can figure out what went wrong is even worse.

Forward slash on panasonic toughbook

It sounds like you have a ToughBook with a NON-US Keyboard or keyboard layout. The physical "SLASH" key is the last key on the bottom row above the SPACEBAR row.

It is the key on the FAR right side just to the left of the right-side
SHIFT key. Make sure in the taskbar that the EN sign is shown
(on the bottom right side of the screen next to the date/time.

If it is shown FR or ES then your keyboard is in French or Spanish.
You can try to use the ALT+SHIFT key combination to toggle
the FR or ES back to EN (English). If not, then you must
ADD the English keyboard in the Control Panel under
Regional Settings (Clock, Language and Region in Windows 7).

Under Keyboards Click "keyboard" then Click "add" then
choose English (United States), Keyboard then US (only).

That is it. Make sure you select US as "Default" and then you
won't have to go thru all this ever again.

Good Luck!

How do I turn on my green keys on my Acer Aspire One?

Not able to find a colour picture of the keyboard - But I suspect you mean the numbers that are on the following keys u,i,o,j,k,l,m
To gain access to these numbers you need to put the number lock "num lock" key on - to do that use the <FN key> together with the <F11 key> That will now change the keyboard so that numbers are displayed instead of the letters
Support site for Acer http://www.acer.co.uk/acer/service.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&miu10einu24.current.attN2B2F2EEF=3734&sp=page15e&ctx2.c2att1=17&miu10ekcond13.attN2B2F2EEF=3734&CountryISOCtxParam=UK&ctx1g.c2att92=122&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2980211862
Select your exact model and then got the document tab, to downlaod the user manual
IF there are other keys that are green on the keyboard - let me know and i can research more

Green function key locked on acer laptop

Hey, I've just been having this problem. Try pressing CTRL + SHIFT + FN all at the same time. I found out that I had to press them once to turn on the green keys, and then press them twice more to turn it off. I hope that works for you.

Bilingual keyboard

There is a small green Fn button near the start button you will have to use this with shift to use the green keys if you are in multi lingual mode, if you only use the laptop for french you can also change the regional settings for the keyboard to Just French and then they will work just by using shift.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Computer is locked in the green symbols of the keyboard

TO SHUT OFF the green keys, you need to disable the multiligual or French keyboard layouts. For Windows 7:

Click CONTROL PANEL
click CLOCK, LANGUAGE, AND REGION

under REGION AND LANGUAGE
click CHANGE KEYBOARDS... etc.

click KEYBOARDS AND LANGUAGES
click CHANGE KEYBOARDS

.......for example, by clicking on a keyboard name (ie. US or and UNITED KINGDOM for example) and then clicking PROPERTIES to the rtight, you can see the actual key layout.......

On the list of installed languages, click anything multiligual or French, and then click REMOVE found on the right-hand column

click APPLY
click OK
Then you've removed the French.

Otherwise you have to click the LEFT ALT key and then the LEFT SHIFT key to swich back and forth between the green keys and the white keys.
