Machine won't recoginze disc from program function

I have a Designer 1 ESS that has just turned 6 yrs old. I have never used the program option on the machine but decided to try it today. When following the directions everything comes up on screen until I press the disc icon, it just beeps and doesn't load the disc. When using the disc through the menu it loads fine, but I can't program it. Suggestions?

As I understand it, the Load button loads designs that you have prepared earlier and saved within the Designer 1, not disks made and saved in your Husqvarna software. These are the .DHV files (this might not be quite the correct file format name - can't remember!) you might see when you look at a disk in your software.

When in Program mode, you need to use the Menu button to go right back to the first D1 opening screen, then choose the Disk icon, navigate through all that to find your design, choose it and it appears on your Program screen. The second time you hit Menu from inside the program screen, you get taken directly to where you were the first time so it is quicker. But first time, it is a long slow process.

I can't use the SET function key On Designer 1

The set function allows modification to the machine settings and has 5 or 6 sub-menues. Do you mean that the sub-menues don't come up upon pushing the set function on the screen? Have you tried pushing slightly to the right and left of the marked area? When you touch the screen for other functions (say programing), are those menues displayed? It may be that the touch screen functions are displaced from where they should be and the screen needs to be re-indexed.

I just bought a used Designer 1 ESS machine and I do not know how to use the dongle

You don't need a dongle for the sewing machine. You either have a dongle for the computer embroidery software in which case it goes in your computer when you've installed the software, or you have a USB stick that has the Husqvarna designs on it.

What colour is it? The USB sticks are blue, the 3D software dongles are red. Only problem is, I think the 4D software dongles are blue too!! My Husqvarna Designer 1 USB embroidery stick (blue) has "USB Embroidery Stick" written on it - have a look for that. The dongle will have Hasp or something like that written on it.

If you are pretty sure it is a USB stick, put it in your machine and turn it on. Then touch the disk/stick icon on the lower right hand side of the screen. Your machine should start to read the stick and you will get a pop-up menu where you can choose from the folders on the stick. If you don't, go into the PROG screen. Touch MENU, touch the disk/stick icon and see if the embroidery files on the stick come up then. Each machine came with a set of designs called Embroidery Disk 100 and three alphabets - Palace Script, Kaligraphia and Clarendon. These should all be on the USB stick.

In the event that it is a dongle you have, but not the software, you need to contact the person from whom you purchased the machine.

You can download the Husqvarna designs from the Husqvarna website, but you will need a Husqvarna formatted USB stick to do this. Therefore, you do need software on your computer. There are some low-cost alternatives to the Husqvarna software - Embird and Sew What come to mind. However, a Husqvarna program called 3D Disk Manager USB came with every USB Designer 1 machine, so you should have got that when you purchased the machine. This will be enough for you to load designs from the HV website and from other websites where you purchase designs.

Can i tell when a viking designer 1 was made by the serial number? recently put one on layaway and would like to know when it was made. serial number is 52003189

I really don't know the answer to that. Have you tried to Google for an answer? There are some tell-tale markings on the models that will help to narrow it down. For instance mine is one of the earlier models and has "Designer 1" written directly below the screen. Later models moved that wording up above the screen. Later still models had "ESS" added. I would need to look at my HV magazines to track down when these changes occurred, so write back with a description of where your decals are. If your machine is on layaway with a HV dealer, they should be able to give you a ball park estimate of its age. Phone and ask them - if they can't/won't tell you, ask them to describe to you where the decals are (I'm guessing you would not have made a note of this before the machine was put aside for you).

I the floppy discs that control my Designer 1 embroidery machine

You can have replacement discs ordered from Husqvarna Viking. Visit an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for them to order the replacement discs. However, you might luck out and they have some already on hand from a scrapped machine or a trade-in. You can find your nearest dealer by visiting the Husqvarna Viking website - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com and clicking on dealer link down the left side of the page.

Good luck.
