Forgot log on password

Troubleshooting lost or forgotten passwords:

  1. Make sure Caps Lock is turned off.

  2. For Notebook computers, make sure Num Lock is turned off.

  3. If the password has special characters in it (examples: ! * $ # +), make sure you press the SHIFT key (not the CTRL key) when entering the password.

  4. Try these common default passwords:
    • Administrator
    • Password
    • Leave password field blank

  5. If you are unable to correctly enter the password after using the previous steps, the only option is a format and reload of the computer with all data removed from the drive.

How to unlock computer

BIOS locked? CMOS or BIOS password?

Remove power. Open computer case.

FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions!

Remove coin-cell CMOS battery.
Press the Power On button in. Hold in for a count of 10 seconds. Let go.
Repeat 2 more times.
(Drains residual power)

Reinstall CMOS battery.

Connect to power. WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.

Also the motherboard may have a jumper on it, which you move in a CORRECT procedure, to remove CMOS settings. (Such as a BIOS password)

Windows password set by the owner/administrator?
Use the Restoration Disk (CD) and perform a Full Install.
(Destructive Installation)

Wipes off all of their data, and gives you a computer as it was, day 1 from the factory.

Don't have the Restoration Disk?
Contact HP Support.

In the USA the disk is free. The shipping and handling are not.
$17 for a 5 to 7 day ship
$24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.

Toll-free phone number in US is, 1-800-474-6836
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Have your Serial Number written down, to give to the nice representative.
It is in the white Service Tag, on the back of the computer tower, (Next to the Windows product key), or up on the side.

S/N = Serial Number
(NEVER give out on a public forum. Only to authorized agents of HP )

If this is a new issue you can revert, or go back in time when the computer was working fine my using 'system restore'

To use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
  3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
  4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.

Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
  5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
  6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page is displayed.
  7. Click OK.
If you successfully restored your computer to a previous state, and the computer is performing as it should be, you are finished.

Also there is a setting under 'power options' on the advanced tab that controls how the pc shuts down when the button is pressed, go and check to see how that setting it configured, by clicking on the drop down button06e3d7f.gif

I forgot my password for my laptop dell inspiron 1720

Hello,

This works with windows XP or Vista-

Windows Vista Repair through DVD Windows Vista comes with a very handy feature from Windows ME days -- System Restore. Vista's System Restore is far more sophisticated than its previous iterations and can be of a real help here. 1. Just pop in the Vista DVD, make sure your BIOS is able to boot (start) from DVD-ROM first.
2. Press any key to boot from DVD when asked.
3. Set the Language to install, Time and currency format and Keyboard or input method
4. Now click Repair your computer, select the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
5. Click System Restore, and then click Next.
6. Click the restore point that was a day before you changed the password, and then click Next.
Doing this will set your computer back in time to the particular date when it was working fine. Don't worry, you won't lose any data -- only that any settings or programs installed after that date will not be accessible anymore. All you've to is re-install and redo any settings that you did.
7. Confirm the disks that you want to restore, and then click Next.
8. Click Finish, and then click Yes when you are prompted.
9. When the System Restore process is complete, hit Restart computer.
10. You can either remove the Windows DVD or just don't hit any key on the keyboard when it asks again to "Press any key." The computer will start much faster if you remove the Vista DVD.
11. After the computer restarts, click Close to confirm that the System Restore process has finished successfully.
12. After you log on with the old password, change the password for the administrator account if you like.
13. This step is most important -- Remember the password this time.
14. Restart the computer to make sure that your new password works fine.
