Question about GE GSS25JFM Side by Side Refrigerator
Refrigerator side of the side-by-side left was open probably at least 8 hours. I found it slightly open when I came home from work. It wasn't making the usual hum, not getting cold. Freezer side seems to be working fine.

Behind the back panel of the freezer section is the evaperator assembly. on the rh side of the evaperator is a sensor pack that is for the defrost cycle. there is a thermo fuse inside of this pack that is open. The fridge goes into an error state if this fuse is open. unplugging the fridge resets the system. the sensor pack will have to be replaced.

The same fan that circulates air in the freezer also blows air in to the fridge. If you open the freezer door and hold the door switch closed you should hear the fan running. If not you have a failed motor or motor control. Look at the back wall of the freezer section and see if there is a heavy frost build up. If so. you have a defrost system problem. Please post back with what you find and with the complete model number and I will try to walk you through the steps of checking everything.

If this is a frost-free model with the evaporator buried in a tunnel behind the cabinet, there's a good chance you've just got it thoroughly iced up inside.
I'd be tempted to see if you can borrow some space in a neighbour's freezer for a day or so and turn your freezer off for 24 hours (with the door propped open) to defrost thoroughly.
Once all the ice has melted and you've mopped up all the ensuing mess, I think there's a good chance all will be well again. Even if it isn't, you haven't really lost anything through trying.

That sound is usually your icemaker calling for water. you can turn off your icemaker by lifting the little arm on the icemaker. As the icemaker calls for water the valve will be activated and will hum. This sound is usually not very loud. If your valve is making that much noise you may consider replacing the valve. The part number for you water inlet valve is #2315533 The retail price is $60.18 . I do have these on hand and available to ship out today if you need one. Please just let me know. You may also consider replacing your filter if your refrigerator has one. Thanks and I hope this will fixYa

Possible of 3 reasons.
1) Defrost bimetal is open and not allowing power to heater element in evaporator coil in freezer.
2) Defrost timer is not going into defrost, motor stopped moving.
3) Evaprator fan motor is not rotating. Possible motor.
First check for frost in the back panel of the freezer section.
if there is frost and the fan is operating, would suggest manually putting unit into defrost, depending on particular model. may be a switch you can move with a standard screw driver to get the fans and compressor to shut off. If you find this either. Top of fridge in refrigerator section below temperature selection controls. Or remove toe plate, the pretty decor under the door. and it will be in there.
If this is an electronic style, look under that toe kick and there is a technician's sheet that will explain how to get into defrost.
Allow 10 minutes for heater to heat, listen for water sizzling on heater element. if this does work. you will need the defrost timer.
Hope this helps.
