Question about Hotpoint 24 in. FDW60 Free-standing Dishwasher

1 Answer

Our Hotpoint FDW 60 dishwasher will not wash.. it heats and drains the water but the pump will not pump the water to the rotary arms. I have checked the motor for continuity and ensured the armature turns freely and they both seem OK. can you advise? I have been told it may be a capacitor problem!!!!!!!

If the washer is not used regularly the shaft can stick to the seals and prevent the motor from spinning. This happens quite regularly for me if you don't use the washer often. You can just take off the bottom panel - after shutting off power to the dishwasher - and access the motor. you should see some fins and then just try to spin the motor by hand. It usually takes about 90 degrees of rotation before the motor breaks free from the seal. You'll have to fight through the spring-like resistance created by the seal-shaft adhesion. After it breaks free the motor spins freely and you should be all set to go. -------- you will have to verify that there is 120V going to it when the wash motor should be running. If you hear the motor humming and kicking out on the overload, then we can assume you have something stuck in the impeller or the motor is bad itself. Check the float switch inside the tub, it should move freely up and down. This is a safety device to insure the dishwasher does not overfill. there will be a start capacitor on the left side of the wash motor. If one of the wires came off the cap, the motor won't run. Regarding the door switches, if you have 120V going to the motor during the wash cycle, you can assume the door switches are o.k. but in some models there is no start capacitor for motor .in that models motor directly gets controlled by the main control board. in that case control board needs to be checked. You can get required parts from www.repairclinic.com
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Reset the power at the breaker, but you may need a new pump and motor assembly. The same pump washes and drains on most Hotpoint models- a solenoid is used to open a drain flap and let the water out, but a bad pump will equal no wash or drain... Dishwasher will fill and empty but no water coming through the spinners

It would help if you provide the model number.
Usually the problem is with the wash distributor circuit. The water alternates between bottom and top spinners (wash arms). The distributor may be faulty assuming the arms are clean and you have checked this. Some models use the same pump for wash and drain using impeller. In that case the problem could be the impeller is clogged and not allowing water to get in the arms. See this diagram.

Model number will help identify the part.

Slow or no drain of water. cleaned out sump covers and ran drain cleaner thru cycle. looking for possible secondary filter.

Hi, if the water doesn't drain from your dishwasher, check the drain line and pump..

A clog in the drain line or air gap (if there is one) is the usual reason that a dishwasher won't drain. Often the problem is at the point where the drain line attaches to the garbage disposer or household drain line. If you remove this line, you can clear any debris from the hose or hose connection. Be sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher again.

Your dishwasher pump ejects the water. The pump is usually mounted directly to the motor, then attached to the bottom of the dishwasher. You can reach the pump from inside the dishwasher, but first you need to remove the lower rack, the spray arm, and the spray arm support.
Look for an impeller--a round plastic fan blade-type of device that spins around. This is the wash impeller, which forces the water through the spray arm. Beneath the wash impeller is the drain impeller, which is similar in size and shape to the wash impeller. The drain impeller pushes the water toward the drain port. These components make up the pump. If any of the pump components are defective, you need to replace them.

Hope it helps...

Is it a dishwasher a washing machine or a drier? Washing machines don't have rotating arms and you said "I've managed to get the drier to drain"

I will assume it is a dishwasher in which case it sounds like your pump has failed.
I hope I have been of help but please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.

Friend got a hotpoint FDW 80 need to no is it hot water supply or cold?

Connect your dishwasher to the HOT supply line. The most common method is to connect to the hot water supply line in your kitchen. Before running the dishwasher, it is also a good idea to turn your hot water on to allow the water in the line to heat up. This will reduce the time is takes for the dishwasher to heat the water for the wash cycle and cut down on the cost of electricity.

WASHING ARMS NOT ROTATING, ITEMS NOT BEING CLEANED. IS THE PUMP WORN OUT?

Please post the model number of your dishwasher here.

I am not familiar with the HorPoint Aquarius dishwasher, but if it is a newer, water conserving, energy saving model, it ~might~ have a check valve that switches/alternates the water from the lower to the upper rack (Other manufactures do this, including LG.)

I know you think I am nuts, but your problem ~may~ not be the wash arm. It really sounds like your heating element is not working, which then does not get the detergent powder up to the high temp it needs to activate the cleaning ability.

Also, buy a box of name brand detergent powder and use it rather that an ultra-cheap box. It really does make a difference with dishwasher detergent.

Good Luck!

Please post back here with what you find, OK?
