Extract your laptop battery for 12 min, then power up using your power cable ( don't use the battery)

If not, check your graphics card, and that it is working properly, also check your fan.

Typically the reason this happens is one of two reasons. Either the brightness has been set to low, or the backlight has gone out in the monitor LCD screen . To check the brightness, press Fn+f8 to try to increase the brightness. If this does nothing, than the issue is more than likely your backlight. In order to replace this you will have to replace the entire LCD screen as the two parts are attached.

Good Luck,

I have had to repair this problem a few times now - 95% of the times on laptops. Most contributions to these forums do not help resolve or explain the issue. Hopefully this might help a few people out there.

This issue is rarely to do with a back light problem. Generally, removing your RAM from the motherboard will solve the problem but possibly only intermittently - still, enough time to get important data from the HD or isolate the corruption on your PC.

The best way to isolate the problem is to first check when the 'black screen of death' happens. If this occurs pre-bios loading (the first screen that shows when your PC boots) you will have to check the RAM cards installed. Most modern laptops are equipped with multiple RAM (generally a 2GB 2GB or 1GB 2GB depending on processors, upgrades, and factory fittouts.) To do this, remove the panels at the back of the laptop, and also the battery. Generally, the RAM can be found as two 'slots' that are on top of one another. Remove the clips, and pop out the RAM cards. Replace both cards and boot the PC on AC power only. If this results in the same screen. Power down, remove the secondary RAM card, retain the primary and reboot. If this fails boot on the secondary and remove the primary.

Most times, you will boot normally on one of the RAM - but VERY slowly (especially for higher performance computers.) Allowing you to isolate the corrupt RAM in question.

Generally, this will show that one (or possibly both) RAM will need upgrading/replacing. Just why your RAM is no good anymore is another mystery for another time. Most computer stores will sell you the RAM you need (just take the computer serial

KEEPING TAPPING THE F10 BUTTON DURING STARTUP... TO GET INTO BIOS CHECK IF YOU ARE GETTING ANY DISPLAY ... IF YOU ARE NOT GETTING ANY DISPLAY IN THE BIOS, RESET THE RAM CHIPS AND THE HARD DRIVE ( DISCONNECT AND RECONNECT FROM THE MOTHERBOARD) .. CHECK IT AFTER THAT .. IF YOU ARE STILL NOT GETTING ANY DISPLAY IN THE BIOS THEN ITS A HARDWARE ISSUE

The screen on my HP Pavilion dv 1000 is too dark. The probem extends 2/3's from the left and almost 1/4 of the screen from the left. It's becoming so bad I barely can read the screen. Thre problem seems to...

If turning up the brightness hasn't helped then the lcd is likely going to fail soon.

option 1: hook it up to an external monitor.
option 2: Look for a replacement lcd on e-bay
option 3: Get a new laptop

HP will charge a lot for the display if they even still stock it.

Hope this helps.

Dark unreadable screen

If you see a dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.
Connect an external monitor to the laptop and power it up, if you see a clear image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.

The backlighting is provided via the LCD inverter as you described.

HP Pavilion, Screen working, but extremely dark!

Hi,
As per your description, I find that the issue is with the LCD Backlight which is also called as LCD Inverter which lights up the LCD to show us the Display on the LCD Display.
If this Backlight is gone bad, you will be barely able to see the Display on the LCD.
Coming to the Noise you had mentioned above can be from the Cooling fans of the Notebook which will be spinning at high speed when the Notebook starts and will reduce gradually after few minutes.
I recommend you to try cleaning the Cooling fan vents using any Vacuum Cleaner or Air Blower.
I recommend you to contact any nearest HP Authorized Service Center and get the LCD Backlight replaced.
Hope this helps....

My power comes on my laptop but screen is dark

First, Plug in an external monitor.
Press <FN> <F4> to toggle between lcd and external monitor to see if it will light an external display.

if that does not work...check your numbers on the bottom against this list. HP knows of flaws on the DV6000X. I loaned a friend a laptop so he could send his in for repair. If the number matches your laptop you are eligible for free repair.
