Question about Leviton Decora Rocker 4-Way AC Residential Quiet Switch, White, #5604-2W

1 Answer

Same as bbhaight's problem on 10/11/09... I am replacing an Eagle 4 way with a Leviton 4 way(CS415) but the new one wont turn on when one of the 3 ways turns light off. I wired the 4 way like the Eagle was: two blacks up and two reds (whites in my case) down. Please help. I've swapped black for black, red for red, and red for white (both individually, not both at once). Help?

I assume you have 2 of the three way switches and this 4 way is between them. Do you have a non-contact voltage tester? They are a great investment for less than $15. Do you also have some way to test continuity? A cheap voltmeter or just a flashlight bulb, battery, and a little wire? If this presents no obstacle, then do the following--- remove the 4-way switch and spread apart the ends of the 4 wires as much as possible. Have somebody stand guard over these wires for safety (and maybe put a wire nut on each of them) then turn on the power. Only one wire of these 4 will be "hot". Take note of which wire this is. Now flip both of your 3-way switches. (If you know which of them is the "upstream" switch, you only need to flip that one.) Now, a different wire of the 4 will be "hot". You have now identified your 2 "In" wires. Turn off the power. Before connecting your switch you need to test it's continuity. You are looking for a pair of terminals that have no continuity in either position of the switch. (there are two such pairs, either pair will do). Connect the two wires you identified as "in" to the pair of terminals you just found. (either wire to either terminal, it doesn't matter) Connect the other two wires to the other two terminals (either wire to either terminal, it doesn't matter). You are done. If it still doesn't work, you have a problem with one of the 3-way switches.

Fan speed control on 2 way circuit

1) Guessing you have 3-way switch where 2 different switches control same Load (light, fan, motor). Unknown wiring, and unknown if fan and light are wired separately.

2) Google search for 3-way fan switch shows Leviton IPF05 with simple straight-forward wiring. Link below has instruction manual, and Live chat button located to right of LEVITON
http://www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ProductDetail.jsp?partnumber=IPF05-1LX&section=47082&minisite=10251

3) It appears that the Leviton device must replace Line side switch.

4) Uncertain if this device also controls fan since the wiring is so simple.

Hi Leonard,

I'm a licensed electrician and will be happy to help you get this working again. I suspect an incorrectly wired or incompatible switch or a load that is not designed for dimming. To know which one(s) is the problem and to be able to provide a solution, I need a little more information.

1) What was the old switch brand and model number?
2) What is the new Leviton switch's model number?
3) What type of light bulbs are you trying to operate in the 3 fixtures?
4) What is the number of and wattage of each lamp in the fixtures?
5) How many switches operate the lights?
5a) If more than one switch is used, what is the brand and model number of the other switch(es)?

Thanks

My rotary dimmer doesn't switch 3-ways. I have to push the dimmer button to "on", then I can use the other switch to turn on/off.

You posted under Leviton rotary dimmer.
Lutron and Leviton have many 3-way dimmer styles, and both make 3-way rotary dimmers.

I remember years ago replacing 3-way switches with dimmers and having same experience as you. One dimmer has to be ON for the other dimmer to dim.

Later I learned when you replace both 3-way switches with dimmers, you buy a control-and-companion dimmer set. One dimmer is main, and it lets you dim from both locations. The two dimmers communicate with each other electronically. Buy these dimmers at lighting store that specializes in fixtures and dimmers. Ask for most experienced salesperson.

I checked to see if rotary dimmers are made in the companion set. And neither Leviton or Lutron show 3-way companion set rotary dimmers.

1) Leviton spec sheet on rotary 3-way dimmers does not show companion dimmer. This indicates that Leviton rotary dimmers don't have capability of communicating with each other.

2) Lutron has image of 3-way rotary dimmers.
Image shows single rotary dimmer in 3-way & 4-way circuit.
This tells me that Lutron does not have companion dimmer for 3-way rotary dimmer.

How can I program my Leviton timer model 6651-I?

Leviton 6651 Manual.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Leviton-6651-manual.pdf
Timer requires a battery which should be replaced each 12 to 18 months.
Timer replaces single-pole or 3-way switch, and does not need a separate neutral wire.
Timer is for incandescent lights only.
500 Watt capacity
Push the door for manual override to reverse program that is in effect.

The 14 hour timing period is represented by 24 dip switches.
Each dip switch is positioned for ON or OFF.

Click the dip switch right or left
Start at the bottom
For example: ON for 3 hours, OFF for 4 hours, ON again for 3 hours:
Click dip switches 1 thru 3 to ON position, 4 thru 7 to OFF position, 8 thru 10 to ON position
ON position is to the right.
OFF position is to the left.

At the end of the 14 hour program, the timer turns lights OFF until the original start time is reached after 24 hours.
Timer will operate like this while in AUTO mode, until function switch is moved from AUTO to MAN or OFF modes.
Function switch is located at very bottom of timer door.
To activate program (on first day), function switch is set to OFF position for 2 seconds, and then move function switch to AUTO mode, and programming cycle begins.

The dimmer switch will turn on and off but wont dim the lights on a chandelier. model 6681-w. tried 2 different ones with the same results.

The Leviton 6681 is a push-button rotary-type incandescent dimmer with 600Watt capacity
559b446.jpeg
If you have incandescent bulbs, the dimmer should work.
If the dimmer has different color wires, try reversing the wires.
If the dimmer replaced a 3-way switch, then this is not the right dimmer.
If you have compact florescent bulbs, you need a dimmer that also dims florescent.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog
Link shows the Leviton 6673 incandescent and florescent dimmer

But you also need dimmable compact florescent bulbs.

You have two of your carrier wires from the three way to the four way switch on the wrong posts. Study the diagram to help explain where you went wrong. You can change the wires around by guessing thru trial and error. The attached diagram will help explain what you are trying to accomplish. If you know which posts connect when the switch is thrown you could figure it out, but trial and error may be the best bet. As long as you don't have a neutral wire in the mix on the switches, you won't hurt anything as long as the power is off while switching so you don't hurt yourself.
