Check that the brushes are the right way round. They will go in the hole in four positions, but only one is right. Use a torch to check inside the hole. Also check the fuse.

where is the mixer's fuse? I have removed the brush and replaced it in all four positions and the mixer still does not operate.

  • Appliance engineer May 07, 2011

You mention "brush" which makes me think you have only looked at one. There are two, one on each side. If this is not the problem, check the fuse in the plug next. If that is not the problem then it is like that the phase board has failed.

I have a KitchenAid KSM90 Stand Mixer and it will only run on Speed 8. Any ideas?

Your description is very incomplete. Does it not start turning until the lever is at position 8 or does it run at high speed from the moment it starts at position 1?
If it's not starting until position 8 then the problem is probably mechanical and will require some parts to be replaced or adjusted.
If it starts on high speed at position 1 then it's likely you need to replace the phase board under the back cover at the top.
Whatever you decide to do check the carbon brushes first as worn out brushes can sometimes create funny speed problems.

Was working few years but doesn't start at all.It being a month without using it, then trying to turn it on but nothing. No issues before. Watched DIY videos just replaced its Phase board, nothing

You really need to get a Multi meter and follow the power, you have replaced the phase board so we can probably discount it being that.
First check that the switch contacts behind the black control board are really touching when you move the speed control lever to turn the mixer on.
Next the cable, do you have continuity from the wall plug to the control board on phase & neutral, (Check green earth wire as well for the sake of safety) that will be the black wire and the white wire on the 2 lower plug in contacts on the black control board at the back.
Next remove the carbon brushes, do they have reasonable length and most importantly are they fitted correctly with the corner key aligned with the blocker at the bottom of the brush holder.
Next with brushes out check for field winding continuity. On the other side of that black control board to where the power comes in there will be a red wire and a white wire that disappear into the motor housing. One of the wires will have a circuit to one of the brass brush holders and the other wire will have a circuit to the other brush holder. The resistance of both of those circuits should be pretty much identical.
After you have done those tests you should begin to have a clue as to where the problem lies.

Kitchenaid connection problem?

The bad sparking can be several different things. The bad sparking at contact points or burned contracts on the switch can be caused by a faulty phase control or wrong wiring. Open the mixer, check wiring, if that is correct remove an replace the phase control board.
If the bad sparking is at the motor brushes this can be caused by worn motor brushes, rough commutator, faulty armature or shorted motor field. First remove the brushes and check that they are not worn to less that 5/16'. Replace with new brushes if excessively worn. If Brushes are fine remove and check armature. you will most likely have to replace the motor/armature assembly.
Thank you,

KitchenAid KSM90 mixer wont turn on, already replaced phase board

Did you play with the Brushes??? If you did you have to make sure that they went back in the correct way or they won't be touching the armature and the mixer will not operate untill the brushes touch the armature. If you did nit take the brushes out at all. then your problem is the flag connectors are not in the correct terminals. 9_15_2012_6_02_40_am.jpg
the other problem is the possibility that when you re-installed the speed board that you now have to tune the mixer by adjusting the screws on the top of the speed board.

Ksm90. Mixer will not run. Tested for power at contacted had power.can I bypass phase board for full motor run. How many ohms should I be getting on field. Ps brushes looked good and long.

be sure motor brushes are inserted in the holders correctly; as 1 side of carbon brush has a shaved corner; and must be inserted as such. you will need a flashlight to shine into holder to see the shape of holder. i've seen this many times.

When I turn the mixer on the lowest speed, it is way too fast. How do I slow down the speed?

The speed on your KSM90 is controlled by three pieces: a Governor Assembly (35), a Control Plate Assembly (36), and a Phase Board Control (39/40 depending on the voltage of your machine). You just need to determine which one of those parts is bad and replace it. I have attached a schematic to this post so you can easily see where these parts are located within the machine. Once you locate the bad part you can either bring it to an authorized repair center (or you can bring it to them to fix it before you open it up) or you can purchase the items direct from us and we will be more than happy to send them to you.

Problem for KitchenAid 300 Watts KSM90 Ultra Power Series Stand Mixer Motor will not operate

This is common problem among kitchenaid mixers. If you are hearing no motor sound what so ever, The likely cause is the carbon brushes are worn or gone completely, and will need to replaced, they are located at the left and right sides of the unit and only fit ONE way. part number for both brushes is W10260958 and comes one in a package. These are a wearable part and when gone will not create an electrical field for the motor to run. If however these are visually OK, the next probable cause of this will be the motor control board, this can cause a great deal of electrical burning smell when it goes. part number for the board is W10119326. The board can be replaced but does require some know how of the unit.Hope this helps

Thanks

Kitchenaid mixer k45ss slow gear stopped working. Took out brushes and now when replace brushes mixer won't work at all

If you look into the brush holder you will see a stopper at the botom ,(this is so when brushes are wore the spring is not driven into armature) .. the brushes have to be inserted so the groove is lined up , try that

Yes, First unplug the unit.On either sides of the mixer there are two black motor brush retainer screws. Carefully remove them paying attention to the motor brush keyed position. You will see that one side is keyed.Check to see if the brush is competely worn down,or possibly cracked ( replace ).Always reinstall brushes the same way they came out. This should solve the problem.
