Question about BenQ PE8700 Multimedia Projector

Won't project on to the screen

I believe the lamp is on but there is no projection of an image onto the screen, it was working for about a year and now is not. Not sure if there is a button that needs to be pushed?

I myself had a 55 inch hdtv ready projection tv and the lamp went out in it. It cost me $104.00 plus shipping to replace it. Check out discount replacement parts but remember that if it is a projection tv, it won't last but approximately two years and you will have to do it again.

My rca scenium hd50lpw175 has a dark image, everything else works, no lights blink, no strange noises, just a dark image. Is it just the lamp that needs to be replaced?

Yup. What happens is, from the heat of the lamp, it begins to warp and gradually sag in the socket. As such, the light no longer gets projected onto the screen as it should.
It will likely die within a week or so, altogether. You will indeed need a new lamp. Make sure the TV is not knocked while in operation - that can cause your lamp to quite literally break (in two!) on the spot.
Learned that the hard way with my projector, which is built around the same principles as a projection TV.

No colour in bottom right corner

I believ you have an issue with the optical block on your set. Light produced by a high-intensity projection lamp enters the optical block and is split into three paths (one each for red, green, and blue) by a series of lenses, condensers, mirrors, filters, and/or beam splitters. Each color has an LCD assembly with polarizing filters and a liquid crystal microdisplay panel (approximately 1" across). On Sony's "3LCD" models, the light is transmitted through each LCD panel, and, on their "SXRD" (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) models, the light is reflected off each SXRD panel. Finally, the three separately colored images are combined with a special prism into the final full-color image, which is then projected/enlarged onto the back of the screen by a projection lens.
The following annotated photo shows various parts on the optical block of a 2004 3LCD model KDF-55WF655 (note that the LCD panel cover has been removed):

Either the block is starting to wear out or you have something blocking the lens, such a dirt or something has fallen and is blocking the lens

Image problem

IF I understand the problem from the limited info in your question, the problem is a distorted picture on whatever surface [probably a wall, or screen] onto which the image is projected.

With all lenses, the axis [centerline of the lens projected] MUST be absolutely PERPENDICULAR [in both the vertical and horizontal planes] to the perfectly plane [flat] surface onto which the image is projected.

IF for example, the projector is mounted in a rear corner of the room, and the camera is aimed downward and to one side to project the image on the center of the opposite wall, or a screen located there, the image will be distorted. It will be larger on one edge [fartherist from the lens] and smaller on the opposite [nearest] edge.

If it is non-perpendicular in only one axis, then two opposite edges will be different lengths, and if out of perpendicular in two axis then no edges will be the same length.

The solution to this problem is that the center axis of the lens must be perpendicular to the surface projected on, in both vertical and horizontal axis.

No Video Display

The lamp should be blindingly bright. The light passes through a color LCD and through a series of lenses that will project the image onto a screen. If the light is "very weak", you won't have enough light to project onto the screen. Try using it in a pitch black room really close to the screen. If you can see ANY image being projected, then the unit is fine and all you'll need is the lamp.... usually a rather expensive item.
