Yes that is known as the click of death. I have a Seagate Barracude that just started the same thing. I'm assuming I will not be able to retrive any data off the drive. What I'm doing on it though is wipeing the drive clean - partitioning it a few times/ formatting and then will return for an exchange. Suggest you try same (depending on age) by using an external housing. you can get them pretty cheap on ebay

Remove the IDE hard drive, and connect the SATA drive to SATA0 (zero) port. Install the OS on SATA drive. You may have to check BIOS. F2 on boot should get you there.

How to partion seagate Free Agent Pro in Windows XP

First make sure that you have a bootable Windows Vista installation DVD, as you will be unable to use your computer if you don’t. Next, download the GParted Live CD and burn it to cd.
Boot off the GParted cd, and you will see your hard drives in the drop-down list. The first drive is typically your boot drive, but you can check the Flags column to make sure.

Next you’ll need to right-click on the partition and choose Resize/Move from the menu.

Now you can either use the New Size textbox, or just click and drag the partition to make it smaller (or bigger). When you are done, click the Resize/Move button. This doesn’t immediately apply the changes, though. You can make other changes to your partitions and then when you are finished click the Apply button.Depending on the amount of data and the speed of your computer, it can take quite a while to resize the partitions. On my computer it took more than 30 minutes.

Once it’s done, quit, remove the live cd and then reboot your computer. Unless you are very lucky, you’ll be greeted with this horrible error message saying “Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.”
Hope this helps!

My Gateway used computer was working and now it won't boot-up and gives message that Hard drive connection is not good. The computer makes clicking or more of a tapping sound and now won't boot. thanks

It sounds like your hard drive has failed, IE.. the clicking/tapping sound. You could have the hard drive tested to be sure. You could swap out the hard drive to another machine and try it.

My dell comes, begins to boot, but then goes to a black screen, what's the problem?

Sounds like it is not seeing the hard drive or is unable to boot from it.

Check the bios and make sure that the hard drive is being recognized there. If so put an xp disk in and boot from it to see if the computer is capable of booting that way. If it does then you may need to reinstall windows.

Hope this helps

When I boot from a boot disk I am unable to change to another drive tells me each drivce is invalid. Also unable to boot from cd. I have 1) a drive (uncheck or check to turn off or on) 2)hard drive same...

Check the cabling between the drives. Make sure the BIOS sees your drives. Try swapping the ribbon cables between the drives and the motherboard. If you have to, disconnect each device and test them one at a time. This process should isolate the problem device. Make sure that the drives' jumper settings are correct, too (per cable if two devices, one master and one slave, or both devices set to cable select).

I just worked through this same issue with LaCie tech support and they fixed it- it was a bad power supply. Fortunately I had another LaCie drive and when I plugged the power supply from that one in to the "misbehaving" drive, everything booted up fine.
