Question about Sony MHC-RX30 Shelf System

1 Answer

Cd player won't play- goes through all three discs and then says no disc on readout. I opened this up and everything is functioning and the magnet brings the cd up to the laser but it won't play?

Just one item- in all three discs, it doesn't spin so does that mean the motor is bad and how much does that cost?

  • lrudacille Jan 30, 2010

It's fixed- it's not working. I took some water and cleaned the lens and all three cd's work now. I used a cotton swab and wet paper towel. Thanks so much.

  • lrudacille Jan 30, 2010

This problem is usually caused by a lens fault.

The spindler will spin for few seconds, but the lens will not detect the laser beam reflected by the CD correctly, and the unit will interpret this as no disk present, as it is not able to read the initial track (TOC).

Try first using a cleaner cd to clean the lens.

If that does not work, the unit must be taken apart, and the lens cleaned using solution and soft cotton stubs. Lens cleaning may affect warranty status. Call manufacturer to get more info.

Here a general article on the topic, procedures to clean the lens are the same for CD and DVDs:My player does not read disks

I am telling you that it is not the motor.

In this kind of system all the three disks are read using the same lens. When this happen the problem is usually the lens. The spindle motor causing this problem is quite unusual.

Clean the lens first, and see if this can bring an improvement.

    I was reading back.

If only one on three disk does not work, then it is still not the spindle motor. Sony multi CD units like this usually have one single spindle motor, and the disks will rotate engaging the same motor.

The problem is likely a mechanical fault, causing the disk from tray nr.X not assuming the correct position or not being catched by the spindle disk for a different reason.

When this problem occurs, there is need to take apart the unit and inspect the disk carousel mechanism as first thing.

The statement "Just one item- in all three discs, it doesn't spin so does that mean the motor is bad and how much does that cost?" is still not very clear.

I will try resuming all possibilities:

If all three trays are not played, and you get No disk, then it is the lens.
If you get no-disk only on one tray, then it is usually a meachanical fault.
If the problem happened using a determined disk, then the problem is the disk.

When problem is spindle motor, the unit won't spin at all. If the unit start spinning, then stop, that is because the player does not 'see' the disk because of the faulty lens, and spindle motor is not energized by control board because of the faulty lens not detecting the disk.

The spindle motor gets definitively powered to read and play the disk only when the lens is detecting the reflected laser beam.

    Good to know.

If the problem happens again, next time clean using isopropyl alcohol or cleaning solution. Water can leave stains on the lens.

    All the best.

Is having trouble reading or tracking disc.I opened top and while playing disc the tracking mechanism goes out then back in and starts playing where it stopped?

You can clean the lens with a small amount of windex and put a little oil like 3 and 1 oil on the spindle motor shaft and on the sled rails. Good luck !

Sony 5 disc cd player won't play 5 cds but plays just 1 disc

Check the mode of operation. There can be a setting where it just plays one disc. Random or mixed will give you more songs to get to other discs.

Tray #1 won't read cd most of the time

Insert a lens cleanig disc into the device and play it at least three times. If the fault is due to any dirt or dust accumulated on lasser pickup lens, thei will rectify the problem. If this does not help you, the laser pickup lens unit of your device should be replaced with same type and number. The lens cleaning disc can be bought from most of the electronic sparepart shops at your town, and won't cost more. OK.

Wont play and we had tied everything

Hello, welcome to Fixya!

Was this player playing previously? And how long have you been using this player? I suspect the lens of the player. Once the lens of the player becomes weak, it won't play discs any longer.

The first thing my mind goes to, is the lens. The lens id responsible for reading/loading data on discs. So if the lens is unable to read the disc, there is no way the player is going to play the disc.

To confirm if actually its a laser problem, insert an Audio CD into the player and see if will play. If it plays, then obviously, your laser (lens) is weak. But if it doesn't play Audio CD, then it might still be the laser (lens) or probably, a mechanism problem.

Get a lens cleaner, use it to clean the lens. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a screw driver, open the player's cover so that you can gain access to the lens, use a cotton board to clean the surface of the lens. This should clean dust or dirt that might be on the lens.

If non of the above solves the problem, then know that you need to replace the laser to a brand new one.

To replace the lens, remove the bad laser, use it as a sample to get exactly the same type and do the replacement. Note that replacing a laser (lens) needs a professional touch, so if you cannot replace the laser, get it to a repairman to fix it for you.

Once this us done, your player will play all DVD discs again.

Good luck.

My panasonic dvd player shows locked when I tried to eject. I can't eject tehDVD. My kids could have jinxed it. Model panasonic sc-pt550 TQ

There are two lock conditions for this device.

If you can't eject the disc:

Enabling removal of disc

1. Select the DVD/CD function.

2. At POWER ON condition, press and hold down the stop button and the power button on the player for at least three seconds.

(The message, "___LOCKED_" appears when the function is activated.)

If you can't operate the functions:

Enabling operation of selector and disc

1. Select the DVD/CD function.

2. At POWER ON condition, press and hold down the play button and the power button on the player for at least three seconds.
(The message, "___LOCKED_" appears when the function is activated.)

Hope this helps!

Reads the games but only says close tray and open tray

It sounds like you will need a drvie replacement or motor. Sometimes the magnetic disc on the motor comes loose and it sticks to the top of the dvd drive cover and causes it to not function. We can fix this for you if your interested email us.

In the lid should be a mgnetic plate that holds the disc to the motor spindle (much like slight pressure would). Inspect it to make sure it's free moving and seating all the way when the lid is closed. I had one unit where the spindle on the motor shaft had slid down slightly causing the magnetic plate to not seat down all the way. Also, if the magnetic plate is removable, try placing it on the disc with the lid open and bypassed and see what happens.

Hope that helps...

If you trust yourself enough to open the case w/o breaking stuff, then open it up UNPLUGGED, locate the laser lens (small, clear, plastic) gently clean the lens with a swab of lens cleaner for glasses.
Also clean the chrome runners that the laser assembly tracks on.
