Startup fails to complete properly

Re HP Compaq Mini 110c. Sometimes when the netbook starts up I get to the desktop screen where the main icons should be displayed eg My Computer, My Documents, Internet Explorer etc but there are no icons displayed just the background screen with nothing on it?

    Jim - thanks for your solution. I'll let you know if it works when I get the problem again. It only happens occassionally.

When on the screen, and you have no icons hold control(ctrl) down and shift key and press escape(esc) your windows task manager should appear, goto the applications tab, at the bottom goto the tab New Task and left click, another window should appear with a text bar, type in the text bar explorer.exe and click ok, all the icons and your normal screen should reapear.

If your screen goes back to normal goto the start bar and goto run or search and type "regedit".
When the regedit window appears left click the " + " sign next to Hkey_local_mechine the the plus sign on software, scroll down to Microsoft folder and click the plus sign, scroll down to Windows nt folder and click the plus sign, the plus sign on Current version folder, then scroll down to winlogon folder and left click on the folder icon, on the right hand side of the screen look for "shell" double click on the icon and delete everything in the text bar and type explorer.exe and click ok and exit out of the window, restart the pc and everything should be back to normal.

Hi there, I have an issue with roatating my screen image. As I was taking a nap with my Compaq CQ10-550CA netbook laying open beside me, I accidentally rolled over on the keyboard and rotated the screen....


Typically, in the lower right hand corner, (the taskbar) there should be an icon among them that has to do with display. It'll be labeled either Intel, AMD/ATI, or NVidia. If you right-click on that icon, there should be an option within one of the menus that allows you to rotate the screen back. Holding Ctrl + Alt + the down arrow key may also work.

2. Click the "Appearance and Themes" icon, and then click "Display."

3. Click the "Desktop" tab.

4. Click on a picture in the "Backgrounds" list, or click "Browse" and navigate to a picture file on your hard drive. Click the file, and then click "Open."

5. Click the "Position" drop-down box, and select "Center," "Tile" or "Stretch."

6. Click "OK." The HP Mini desktop background is changed.

Remove the cmos battery for 5 - 10 minutes. That will reset all data in the bios.

Tried F6 and F11 to reboot my compaq mini notebook, it's not working. When I turn on the notebook it shows F9 change boot device order and F10 BIOS setup options then it goes to a black screen with...

it may be worth trying the F12 key at startup it may work for you

good luck


or try the F8 key on start-up and try the back to last known good configuration

Yes, a replacement keyboard should solve your problem. The way to check is to plug in an external keyboard... if that works fine then you can be pretty sure that the netbook itself is fine and it just needs new keyboard

I'm having problems with my HP Mini Notebook when I start up all the icons start up slowly and also to when I use Quick Web I get a web site and then it starts to reboot continously on it's own it...


Download this, install and run it. Remove any issues it finds

You really need to go to start, run, type "msconfig" and check the startup tab

That's all the apps that are starting when you start your laptop. Most of it doesnt need to start. It should run when you open it but not on startup. Most of it gets added to the system tray which are all the icons you see next to your clock. Slows everything down.
You kinda have to know what your looking at deselect items you dont want starting.
You should be safe just deselecting everything but say your Antivirus program and restart.

ok try starting in safe mode, keep pressing f8 on startup till menu appears, then run system restore if safe mode works

Blue screen when inserting a SD storage card. The blue screen info pops up a fraction of a second and the computer reboots. I have installed the latest drivers and still have the same issue. Anyone else...


You have a faulty system board. I would advise you to replace the system board. If its under warranty get it replaced. You can get these boards cheap if you search around.
