Question about Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus Calculator

I have no idea what you mean by program in this context. So I am going to assume you want to solve, because that is what one is supposed to do with an equation.

Suppose you have the quadratic equation a*X^2+b*X+c=0, where a, b, and c are constants. Specify your own constants if you want to use this calculator.

- Define a function Y1= a*X^2+b*X+c
- Graph it if you want.
- Use the solve( command to find the roots of the equation (the zeros of the function)

- Press [2nd][0] to open the (CATALOG) of commnands
- Press [LN] (S) to jump to the first command in the CATALOG that starts with S.
- From there, scroll down till you point to solve(
- Press [ENTER]
- Commnd echoes on main calculator screen as solve( with blinking cursor. You must enter the function Y1 you defined before.
- Press [VARS], and right arrow to highlight [Y-Vars]
- Select [1:Function] then [1:Y1]
- Y1 echoes on main screen, which displays solve (Y1
- Complete the command by entering a comma, X, a comma, initial guess and ) parentheses.
- The screen dispays solve ( Y1, X, value_of_initial_guess)
- Press [ENTER]
- If your guess is good, you will not wait long to have one solution.
- To obtain the second one, press [2nd][ENTRY] to recall the last command to the command line solve ( Y1, X, value_of_initial_guess).
- Use the arrow to modify the value of the initial guess, make sure the ) is still there and press [ENTER].
- If the guess is good you will get the second solution.

How did I get such good guesses? Usually it is trial and error, but I cheated: I drew the function to have an idea about the values of X where the function vanishes.

The calculator cannot do symbolic algebra. If equation is aX^2+bX+c=0, write it in the form a(X^2+(b/a)X+(c/a))=0 and solve the quadratic equation X^2+(b/a)X+(c/a)=0. Get the approximate roots X1, and X2 (if they exist) and write your original equation in the for

a(X-X1)(X-X2)=0

You can do it the same way people did it before calculators were invented. Just use the quadratic formula: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadratic_formula. Some sophisticated calculators have generalized equation solvers that can handle equations much more complicated than the quadratic, but the fx-82 isn't one of them.

The BAIIPlus doesn't have anything specifically for solving quadratic equations. You can simply plug the coefficients a, b, and c into the quadratic formula.

Your scientific calculator is unable to solve complex equation with complex coefficients. You should try to solve by hand directly using the quadratic formula or by factoring the polynomial in z

failing that, another way would be to set z=x+iy, substitute this for z, carry out the algebra and try to separate real and imaginary parts. But your two equations will constitute a system of two quadratic equations. I am not aware of any general method to solve coupled nonlinear equations.

You cannot solve the quadratic equation with this calculator. It does not have a solve program.

However if you wnat to create a table of values for a function (any type of function that uses the basic scientific function keys ) you use the TABLE Computational Mode.

You press MODE

You select TABLE

You enter a mathematical expression 3X^2-.33X+ 15

You generate the table of values.

Press MODE 5 to bring up the equation types. Press 3 for the quadratic. Enter the three coefficients. Press = to see the first root. If the display shows x1 then press down to see the other other root. If the display only shows x then that's a double root. Given the two roots x1 and x2, the factors of the quadratic are (x-x1) and (x-x2).

In your manual, Appendix Program Library, (Page A1) you have the listing of the problem to solve the quadratic equation. Type it in your calculator and execute it.
