Question about Sony Dream Home Theater System, DAV-DZ120 System

1 Answer

When playing a DVD the dialog track is only a mumble. All the other sound is crisp. I've owned this system for about three years and this problem just occurred.

Hi.

If all other functions are working , and the problem is not on a single DVD, then it may be a firmware issue.

Unfortunately firmware upgrade for this model is not available online.

In that case you will need to contact Sony at the number listed on product user manual, they will follow you through the procedure.
If the upgrade is not available, Sony usually replaces products that are defective because of factory problems even out of warranty time.

First ensure that the problem is the home theater player, and not a bad connection to the speakers.
Also ensure that the problem is happening on different DVDs, and it is not caused by a defective disk.

Before calling Sony, leave the unit disconnected for about ten minutes, to reset the circuits, and check all connections. If the problem is still there after this simple reset, contact Sony.

The system plays the music but the voices are mumbled.

Look on the remote for "mode", "effect" and or the "sound edit" buttons. There are a few different sound effects to choose from.

Generally, remote controls for DVD systems have a button labeled "Audio". This button changes which audio track you will hear during the movie. Common tracks include English, French, Spanish, Commentaries, and occasionally Audio for the Hearing Impaired.

It seems odd for the latter audio track to be default, but clicking the Audio button until you have the plain English track should work. I would consult the manual if you have it on hand to see if your system is capable of remembering which track to start on.

Hope this helps.

Well let me first ask is the center chanel working? or properly hooked up. Cause most of the times when in 5.1 the talking or "dialog" as you put it comes only through the center channel its just kinda how they do it. Listen to see if the center channel is working. if you are unsure try hooking up a speaker that you know works into the center channel speaker output. If no sound comes out then the reciever possible has blown its center channel. Please follow up with a comment and i will be glad to assist you further thanks, Midwes-tek

DVD player and receiver will not play a dvd in surround sound ?

The dvd player is responsible for reading the surround sound track, and sending it to the receiver. First make sure you are playing the surround sound track on the dvd, many have a stereo track too. Next, try another dvd and see if you can play surround sound on that one. If you can't play surround on ANY dvd I would start looking at the audio connection from dvd to receiver. Are you using an optical cable? Red, white, and yellow RCA cables? Optical will transmit any sound over only one cable, RCA cables need one cable for each channel (LF, C, RF, LR, RR, sub.) If your connections are correct, is the receiver set to play a surround sound track? Is it set in 2 channel mode?

What type of output are you using? Try using the component video output on the DVD player. (that's the one with three colors) This worked for me when the composit and s-video outputs stoped working.
