Question about Maytag MMV4205 Microwave Oven

Maytag microwave mmv1153aaw

Our 2-year-old microwave all at once started humming very loudly and issuing smoke and burning electrical aroma. I know the smell of burning grease, and it's definitely not that. The turntable still turns, and the fan (not vent fan) still runs.I suspect magnetron. Am I right?

No, it's not the wave cover. I took that off and checked it per earlier advice I read. It is clean and unburnt. No, it doesn't heat the food at all. My son was using it to pop a bag of popcorn, and it popped only half of the kernels

drcool299 was right on the money. Unfortunately, I had already taken my microwave to the repair shop. It was a diode, though I don't know which one. The shop said it was "in the capacitor." Thanks much! Wade

My guess would be the wave cover. sometimes they smoke and makes sparking sounds. does it still heat food?...if it does, then its not the magnetron.

try checking the industrial diode that is connected between the capacitor and the ground of the unit. check also if there is a diode in between the terminal of the capacitor. if there is, check that one too.

My 8 year old Maytag over the cooktop microwave does not heat food, but all other functions seem fine. There is a new, loud noise, similar to an electric motor that is seized.

Mircowave runs but doesn't heat and it has a load hum.

You may need a new microwave..however, the diode may be defective or the magnatron tube may need replacing,,The magnatron tube is only warranted for 5 years so it may be used up as the model is (10years)fairly old.

Unfortunately, if you have cut a wire internally then any warranty will be void.

Have you investigated why the transformer is sparking? This sounds like either a serious problem with the transformer or simply a loose connection.

I assume when you cut the wire you have made sure that it is insulated from the chassis?

Intermittant loud "pop" when starting my microwave

Clean well the inside of the oven, if you keep having the problem and the inside is clean, then the magnetron is starting to go.

GE Spacemaker XL1800(JVM1850CF001) - Loud Humming noise

You either have a bad magnetron tube (5 or 10 year parts warranty item through GE Factory Service 1-800-432-2737 or www.geappliances.com) or a shorted high voltage rectifier. I think the light being out is a secondary problem.

COINCIDENCE? Yes... :) So go buy another one, it'd probably be cheaper than getting the bad one repaired.

I have the same problem with mine!!! I spent 58 dollars to have a 6 dollar diode replaced. Now 8 months later... same prob. Replaced again myself and working fine again. Just make sure you label the wires while working on it. I didn't and it cost me 2 new fuses! Hope this helps.

Maytag Rangehood Microwave Loud Humming

Sounds like you just fried your magnetron. Normally when they go bad, they make a very loud noise like what you described. The smell concerns me because you may have ruined the waveguide as well. If the magnetron burns through the protective painted surface of the waveguide, the waveguide is ruined. In most microwave ovens this means replacing the entire unit because the waveguide is not replaceable. Putting a new magnetron in a damaged waveguide will result in the same arcing and eventual failure. In addition to the magnetron, the following components are part of the same high voltage network: HV Transformer HV Diode HV Capacitor Magnetron Thermal Cut-Out Any one of these components could have also been damaged. I DO NOT recommend taking any voltage measurements inside the HV network. Potentials of over 4000 volts can be reached and make it very dangerous for the do-it-yourselfer. Taking resistance readings with the unit unplugged is strongly encouraged. If you decide to pursue a repair, inspect the magnetron tip and inside of the waveguide first. If the magnetron is melted and/or there are burn marks inside the waveguide, a new microwave may be a in order. This actually may be a better option than an expensive repair. I hope you find this advice helpful.
