What OS are you running? If Windows, try unplugging the USB cable, restart your system the reconnect the USB, go to computer management/disk management and see if your drive is visible and check its status. Should see it as Disk 1 basic, online, healthy. I had a like issue with a Maxtor external enclosure and that resolved the issue. All the data was present.

You do not need to format your HD unless there was something else that was not mentioned in your issue. Simply powering the drive down and restarting your system with it plugged in should resolve the issue

People often feel panic when I see this. If I format the drive, will I lose all my data? If not, how could I get access to my files?

My take is that you may try some data recovery software first, download this one called asoftech data recovery

If does not work, you may have to format (use quick format) the drive and then use recovery software to recover your files. Here's some information about format recovery, think you need to take a look, very useful

Will only boot in safe mode won't connect to lan or wireless, locks up after a few mins, ran everything I can to repair..can't access dvd drive to do a complete format any suggestions?

You may need to pull the hard drive and connect to another computer as a external device to format the hardware, but if you can access bios, reset to factory defaults before pulling the hard drive and try again.

I have a folder that everytime I try and drag music to it tells me that the disc must be formated and it won't let me delete it either. But ever other folder works fine... The drive is almost full and...

Restart in safe mode it should delete then otherwise start taskmanager and look under processes something must be running in that folder to stop you deleting it. Try making a new folder first and copy everything you can then delete it. Its not a major problem dont even think of formatting it. Cheers and please vote

When i try to format my pc it asks me to select a drive and when i click on C:/ it tells me that the drive is damaged and cannot be formatted..whereas it shows me correctly about my othe drives...pls help...

You shouldn't ever format a drive unless you wish to destroy all data. If the drive is damaged, then it may NOT be able to be handled by normal software you may have to run data recovery software, there are many free types on the internet to download. to recover, any data that can be.
Usually C:\ is the Drive where the boot track and Windows, and data like in My Documents is kept, if this is formatted over, it will damage the data on this disc, rendering it useless.
If you wish to recover data you will as said have to find some other way. When all data is removed, or whatever, then the drive could be formatted for re-formatting, and re-installing of Windows.

Do you want to access the drive d and get your files. You can not access it when you double click the drive. The drive will says access denied. To access the drive d open My Computer you can see there a address, there is and arrow there just click. Chose the drive d to open i am sure that you can open it.

Good luck!
