If you have a clicking hard drive and the system gives a F2 to continue but will not boot, most likely you have a hard drive failure.
Boot to the BIOS (F2 at boot) reset the defaults and save, see if anything changes.
Most likely, you will be replacing the drive

When this happens, you either have a hardware or bios problem. First thing to try is to re-start your comptuer and hit the F8 key this time. This should give you a menu including start in safe mode, start in Last known good configuration. Try selecting last known good configuration and see if this works. If not, try starting in Safe mode.

If this does not have work, re-start your computer and hit the F2 key to go into setup. This will be your BIOS, or Basic Input and Output Settings. You can go thru the tabs and see if you hard drive is recognized. Look under IDE configuration. If your hard drive is listed properly, then you motherboard is seeing your hard drive.
Then, go to the tab on the far right and look for reset bios or load system defaults. Sometimes, this will help you get by this problem.

IF none of this will work, then you ma have a hardware problem. If you have a operating system disk, you can put it in the disk drive and restart your computer. Look for a message to press any key to start with CD drive. Follow the prompts and reinstall windows. DO NOT format the drive unless you want to erase everything on your hard drive.

If this information helps you with your issue, please remember to leave positive feedback.

Thank You,

Brian

On the Boot-up screen I get the message: "Diskette

I think you should press F2 to go to the setup page.

There, you should change the order of your boot device.

set the first boot device to hard disk

set the second boot device to cd rom

and the third to floppy.

follow the instructions and click save and continue

Heloo sir i have a problem with my dell 170l when i start it it shows ''strike F1 to continue, F2 to run the setup utility'' when i click f1 it show ''f1 to retry boot,f2 for setup utility'' plz help me...

Hit F2,look in setup to see if the hard drive is recognized and check that the date and time are correct.
Then hit esc key. it will ask if you want to save changes, click yes. It should boot and probably ask you to hit F1 or F2 again., unless there is a problem with the CMOS battery, which may need to be replaced.
If you hit F1 to continue, it will boot, but your time and date will be off.

This indicates that your computer is configured to boot on the floppy drive.
1. At the start of the computer Press F2
2. Go to the Boot Device Configuration.
3. Enable Hard Disk Boot Priority.
4. Set the First Boot Priority to Hard Disk
5. Save and Exit.

Please let me know of the outcome. Thank you and regards.

My Dell Latitude will not boot. it says no hard disk detected.

The first thing to do is go into the bios. To do this, power up the laptop and hit F2 at start up. Sometimes it requires hitting the F2 button numerous times. You should see message in the top right corner that says "Entering Set Up". Once in the bios screen, look through menu to see if your hard drive is recognized by the bios. If it is not recognized by the bios, it may be a defective hard drive or problem with the motherboard. You might also try removing the hard drive and checking for any problems with the connector then reinstalling the hard drive and trying to boot up again. If this does not work, I would recommend replacing the hard drive.

Dell Dimension E521 ''Diskette Drive 0 seek failure''

Is there a diskette drive installed? The bios is looking for a device that was enable but not there. If you prefer to ignore this problem you may do so,however the fix is very simple, unplug the computer remove the cover, there is a coin battery which stores the configuration of the computer you may need to remove it.This will erase the configuration stored in the bios,or you can install a jumper on the motherboard which will clear the bios setting .Remember to return the jumper on the pins it was on.
good luck
