Question about Reliance 43614 Heater

Open Question

I have a Reliance Sta-Kleen 805, the date on it is 1991. I'm noticing an exhaust or burning odor near it. I've recently had contractors on my roof checking my vents because squirrels have eaten on them and are causing water leaks. Could they have somehow stopped up the vent or is it just time to get a new one and check the vent? Also the hot water comes out of the shower upstairs fine to start but quickly turns to a trickle and must be readjusted once in the shower, another symptom?

Used, Reliance 805 is power vent gas
10 year old water heater that is newly installed.
Unknown gas control valve.
I'm not a fan of installing old power vent water heaters.
Usually these things are so expensive that old one is only replaced when it fails.

120Volt Outlet must have correct polarity and unit must be grounded between ground prong on cord to manifold tube connected to bottom of gas control valve. Test for continuity with multimeter.

Is this an early FV model with air intake located on bottom?
If air intake is clogged with dust, then combustion chamber overheated and tripped FV system. The older heaters need replacement parts and new gas control valve, or entire heater must be replaced.

Replace gas control valve.

Replace thermocouple gas water heater

Thank you for the brand. Approx how old is water heater? 2nd and 3rd digit of serial number are year of manufacture.
For general instructions:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html

Reliance is AO Smith, and air intake is located on bottom of tank.
Inspect and Clean intake.
Do NOT underestimate need to keep air intake clean because the arrestor screen is fine mesh and once clogged will cause heater to fail. Older models might need full replacement and at least parts.

Product manual?
These gas water heaters are changing quickly today. The Reliance site shows the 909 but not 805

The older designs are different, but instructions shown above will help.

I can not light the pilot on my reliance sta-kleen 502 (30 gallon) waterheater. please help

Reliance is Rheem
Replace thermocouple is best start point.
Example Whirlpool manual shows general replacement steps on page 22:
Buy thermocouple at hardware or home center. measure length before going to store.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Whirlpool-6510397.pdf

Utube videos show how to replace thermocouple

Many things can affect pilot:
Low gas pressure, Water or air or debris in the gas control valve, High-heat event causing ECO to trip requiring new gas control valve, burner and tubes needing clean-out, FV sensor tripped, loose or bad thermocouple.
Manual above shows general steps for doing some of these things, but service technician is probably best choice if thermocouple does not fix problem.

Gas water heaters require periodic maintenance.
If repairs cost more than $330, then buy new gas water heater and install yourself.
Use the old one for a solar collector.

Have sta kleen 805 , have power,240 v no hot water

If I understand correctly, your water heater circuit tested for 240 Volts.

1) If circuit has power on one leg of the 240V circuit, water heater can appear to have electricity, but won't turn on since 240V needs both legs to complete the 240V circuit. Solution: test for 240 across top two screws on upper thermostat.
http://waterheatertimer.org/B220C.html

2) ECO reset button tripped on upper thermostat. Solution, push in reset button. If reset will not reset, then replace upper thermostat. I usually replace both upper and lower thermostats at same time: cost $28. Buy parts from home center or hardware store. Be sure to put factory-insulation and covers back so thermostat is not exposed to cooler outside temperatures, that cause hotter water than set point.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html

3) If ECO reset button keeps tripping, then keep resetting until you can test water heater parts. Spend 30 minutes and do complete troubleshoot on tank.
Buy cheap multi-meter from home center. When test calls for checking voltage, rotate dial to 240-250-277 VAC. When test calls for checking continuity or elements, rotate dial to Ohms (upside down horseshoe is ohms).

Steering wheel vibration at speeds above 50mph

this could be a few things. if the odor was of rotton eggs...it's either a broken/loose motor mount that shakes the exhaust system causing the catalyitic converter to make that smell, or, in a worse case, its your transmission overheating and burning up ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and this is causing the torque converter plates to rotate out of harmony with each other causing the vibration. if the smell is more a burnt rubber, it's much more likely you have a timing issue or a worn main bearing on your crankshaft. this causes vibration and wear on the belts causing them to "burn" or emit that burnout smell. either way, take it to your mechanic right away because none of these problems will end well if left unattended. good luck!

When we start the car after it has not been started and engine is cold, we get a strong exhaust odor on the inside of the car until engine has warmed up

Is the exhaust loud? If not it may not be an exhaust smell. I work at an exhaust shop and we have seen a few vehicles with the same issue. More often than not, it ends up being a fluid leak (usually oil) that has flowed on to an exhaust manifold or front pipe and on start up the fluid burns off, causing the odor. Once the fluid has burned off there is no more smell. This is no to say the leak has stopped, but the odor is less noticeable when the vehicle is moving and the fluid burns off a little at a time as opposed to all at once like it does on start up. Hope this helps to steer you in the right direction, good luck!
